The White Stripes Boston 07/23/07

Here is a little mini-review of last nights show.

The first thing that must be mentioned is how hard BU tries to prevent people from having a good time at this venue. I am not going to go into it but lets just say they try VERY hard! Anyway after having the beer taps removed right in front of me BEFORE TWS went on I made my way to my assigned coral with a water for me and my lady. I will say that Jack does have some energy and he is not afraid to use it. Lots of good songs were played. The one thing I love about Jack's music is the dirt. I love dirty raw music! This concert gave me my fix of dirt for some time. He just fills the place with wonderful dirty distortion. Then there is Meg. I would not be rude and say that if Jack was on stage with the Casio SK-1 I got for Christmas in 1986 and only used the "Samba" rhythm it would have been better. It would have been just as good though. She is SO replaceable it is incredible. 50% of this band is keeping them down and they still rock!!! I am afraid of want would happen if Jack played with a real drummer. My head may explode. She took a total of ZERO drum solos throughout the whole show. She does have two wonderful attributed but I still don't think its enough to merit playing with such a rocking guitar player.
I would also say that I have seem smoother stage crews. Jack did seem to have to figure some stuff out on his own that I would think was the crews job. Anyway over all a great 90min of music. I will go and see them whenever they come my way.

I think meg's style (or lack thereof) is part of what makes the white stripes work so well. The minimalist, tribal style she plays adds to the raw and gritty style of the band. As i understand it, she only started playing drums on a lark something like 10 years ago. I don't know if she's had any formal training.

Agreed, I believe Meg's style of playing is what Jack revolves his playing around. He's said in interviews that he can go any which direction with music (Ractoneurs, Lorreta Lynn's last album, and the Cold Mountain soundtrack shows this). For the White Stripes, the direction he goes in is based on Meg's style. He attributes the White Stripes sound from Meg.
