I also purchased a game with the PS3 called "Darkness". It did download some updates, but I am not really sure what they were. It is a brand new release, so I assume it gave me the latest updates.

My computer is in another part of the house, so I have no way of downloading updates via the internet.

I just bought a PS3 as a birthday present to myself I went to my local Blockbuster yesterday and rented three BluRay disks, Happy Feet, Apocalypto and Aeon Flux. I popped in Happy Feet last night and my jaw about hit the floor 

The detail and color was amazing. I did not expect this big of a difference between BluRay and my Oppo. And this is with a 50" Panny plasma that is 720p.

Call me impressed!

What you want for firmware upgrades is 1.82 or better for much improved sd dvd playback...but it sounds like your PS3 may already have it.

Fry's seems to be the cheapest place to buy BD movies...but unfortunately we don't have them in my area..

I believe everyone of the titles I mentioned look phenomenal and include uncompressed linear PCM tracks which you can only get via hdmi from the PS3 in multi channel.

The PCM audio tracks will probably suprise you as much as the P/Q improvement.

I checked and my firmware was upgraded to v1.80. I tried to update via wireless connection (did not even know it had that) it gets about half way through and then I get an error message.

I have the paperwork here to get my free movies 

I have a Fry's nearby and will have to go check out the selection this weekend, those are some great prices, thanks for letting me know!

Now I'm excited to get rid of my Rotel HT receiver and get something with HDMI.

I mistakenly put 1.82  as its been a while since I did that upgrade the first day it was released , when in fact 1.80 is the upgrade which tremendously helped sd dvd playback...so your set there.
There is a newer firmware upgrade than this but its not pertaining to BD/SD DVD playback, so I haven't bothered with it yet.


Another thing is that there is a hidden HD test pattern on every Sony BD release and to access it you..
