Recommendation for a tricky room.
« on: 20 Jul 2007, 06:59 pm »
Hey guys,
I have a very large room that has a drop ceiling with an additional 4 foot of space above it and no insulation above the tiles. In fact there is noting in the ceiling except for a few birds and steel beams for the roof. Overall footage of the open ceiling area is about 1300 Sq. ft. The floor has a basement below. It is wall to wall carpeting with very thick padding. The room itself is about 17' x 30' or 510 sq. ft.
Curious what others have done to deal with drop ceilings. With thatmuch space above the ceiling (the whole building), as you can imagine, it has potential to cause some bass problems with some speakers and with the new large, full range speakers I have coming in, I am trying to figure out to remedy this.

 Any suggestions?

Bill,

I stuffed my space -- corners and edges-- above the tiles with R30 fiberglass batting.  I also replaced all the ceiling tiles with ones with NRC value of .5.  I couldn't afford the sonnex stuff so I just got some at Home Depot with NRC value listed.

Yup.  Line the 'triangle' in the attic with some R-19.  That'll certainly help.

NRC value of .5

woodsyi,

What is NRC value of .5 at Home depot?

My room is 12Wx9Dx8H. I have been experiencing the lack of bass. Since the room is too small for horn speakers I have to place the speakers only one and half feet away from back wall and two feet away from side wall. I have furnished with Eighth Nerve corners and horizontal rectangles. My listening position is nearfield (no space for backwall where I seat). Any suggestions? Thank in advance.

Here is the explanation of what NRC is.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_Reduction_Coefficient

Some examples of common material for comparison. http://www.acoustics.com/nrc.asp

Now look at the acoustic tiles like Sonnex.  http://www.silentsource.com/ceilings-ac-sonex.html

I am sure they work well but they are expensive.  Home Depot or Lowes carry 2' x4' Armstrong ceiling panels like this one.  http://www.armstrong.com/resclgam/na/ceilings/en/us/prod_detail.asp?itemId=44839.0
It has a NRC of .6.  I am sure these do not in any way perform as well as the sonnex tiles, but these will run like $4 per panel (I think just under $40 per box of 10). Just to be more effective, I doubled the depth by placing extra ones above the fitted panels.  It seems to work for me.

My original thoughts were to do exactly that, replace the tiles and add fiberglass above. The problem is I don't own the building (yet) and would hate to sink that kind of money into it. If I did more in-store auditions, I might be able to justify it. Then again, with the amount of money in the system, what good is it if the room sucks.
Oh well, gues I will have to bite the bullet and start concentrating on getting this room the best it can be. At least I am not going to do the whole showroom. OUCH! That would hurt.
Maybe I need to start pushing the owner to sell.
