Help! New Titan XL Buzzes When Turned On
« on: 20 Jul 2007, 01:11 am »
Hi All:

New to the board and Audio Circle, and this board is one reason I bought (and just received) my Titan XL.

Unpacked it (it had a chip in the back, but that's neither here nor there for the moment), hooked my mid-line Audioquest Copperhead subwoofer cable to the "Theater" input, turned the filters to 250 as instructed, turned it on and BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ... very loud even with the sound turned down.

I am running an HK 7200 AVR.

This sub is to replace my Hsu VTF-2, which I have had for 5 years.  The amp went bad and Hsu replaced it (for $125 or so).  Sub still didn't work and started blowing fuses, so I ship the amp component back, and when it returns the driver just sounds all kind of muddy.  In the meantime I took the HK in to a factory authorized service center to check out the subwoofer output, and they said nothing was wrong.  I called HK and they said there is no way the subwoofer output could be doing anything to cause the Hsu to fry and/or sound like crap.  So I finally decided to take the plunge and buy the Titan, and I have the above referenced issue.

When it is not connected to the cable and I turn it on it was quiet.

So.... any thoughts?  I know I can wait 10 hours and 45 minutes to talk with customer service, but you know a boy and his toys... and his wife wondering why I spent so much money on something that goes BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Thanks,

David

I'm just curious; is your receiver turned on or off when this buzzing occurs?

Both.  Which is, of course, weird.... I;m starting to wonder if it is actually the cable itself that might be the problem.

I turned off the HK -- sort of into "sleep" mode and it buzzed, and then turned off the full power to the HK and it buzzed, but as I said when the cable is not connected no problem.

Hmmmmm...

gonna see if I have another cable long enough for the run.  In the meantime, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions......

Thanks for the quick response, A6M.

Sonuvagun..... at this point I would bet dollars to donuts (which ain't the same deal it used to be) that the problem is in the cable itself.

Disconnected the cable from the receiver and turned on the sub.. BZZZZZ, just not as loud.

Disconnected the cable from the sub, and silence.

Connect one end of an audio interconnect to the sub and more silence.

Any recommendations on sub cables, folks? :D

I'll be done smacking myself in the forehead pretty soon.

Sounds more like a ground loop to me. Did you ahve a sub in place before? Any noise?

I had the same problem and finally found that it was the 3rd prong on my new plasma TV that was the ground loop, removed it an dall is quiet. (you can do this by using a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter so as not to ruin your TV)

Sure sounds like a bad cable to me . . . you went through the steps and isolated it. Any RCA shielded interconnect will work to get it up and running. I recommend DH Labs Subsonic for a permanent deal . ..

As far as that chip in the rear, check the box for damages . . .  sounds like UPS poked it with something, guarantee it didn't leave here with a chip (unless it was B-stock?)

Mike:

You are 100% correct... there is a nice size puncture in the box, which, if I wasn't looking for it would not have noticed as it just looks like a depression.

I'll call you guys for what to do next.  Thanks.
