PS3 + Preamp ????
« on: 16 Jul 2008, 01:47 am »
Hello Folks,

I have a bit of a dilemma and I was hoping a few of you great and knowledgeable folks here could help me out.  I just recently took delivery of a Odyssey Candela to finish off my stereo system.  I also just bought a PS3 mainly for the great blu-ray player included.  What I would like to know is what can I do to get my PS3 to output to my preamp so I can watch and listen to these amazing concerts filmed in blu-ray.

I'm thinking the solution will obviously revolve around a DAC of somesort, and one with a usb would be a plus as well but will the DAC support the audio format being sent by the PS3?  Perhaps something like that Havana DAC that has been talked about here would work but once again I have no idea if the formats will clash or not.

What would you guys/gals do if you were in my place?  Listening to concerts dvd's through my T.V. speakers is just not fun at all.  Thanks for your help!!!!

P.S.  Do forgive me if this should have been posted in the HT circle  :duh:

Perhaps my original post needs some clarification to get some of you to reply with some advice.  My dilemma is like this, my candela only has analog inputs but the PS3  uses a digital toslink output for audio.  What is the best way to make the two work together? I'm not going to sacrifice picture quality and use the composite cables from the PS3 so what do I need to add to the system to make this work?

If this question is so off base just delete this and I will be on my way  :duh:

Hello,

I have owned the PS3 for the last 1.5 yrs and have been happy using the analog outs as I do not have a HT receiver that can handle the new audio codecs.

You should be very successful using the analog out cable for audio to your two channel Candela preamp.  You will want to use HDMI for video only from the PS3 to your television/projector.

The PS3 is probably the one of the best values in audio/video today.

If you have an outboard DAC or high end cd player with digital inputs like Cambridge C740 or C840 you could also run optical out from the PS3 to the DAC and then run the analog outs from your DAC to your Candela preamp.

Just because you use analog outs from the PS3 doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy the highest picture quality.  Blu ray is really incredible.

Hope this helps.

Nick, thank you so much.  I had no idea that you could still use the analog audio cables with the hdmi for video at the same time.   :duh:
