New Fet Valve DAC Owner, 24/192 Question...
« on: 21 Apr 2013, 04:09 pm »
Well, my first post here on the Circle! Just got the new DAC in house yesterday that I purchased in like new condition from a great and long time AVA owner. Very excited about my new gear. In my system, it has opened the door to a new world of incredible resolution that I have never heard before. This DAC is quite amazing!

So as a new owner, is this DAC like what I have read about the Vision DAC where you can either play 96 or 192 files but not go between them on the fly? If so, it is not a huge issue as most of my "hi res" files are 96. It would be nice however to be able to play my 192 files also.

I am using iTunes with BitPerfect at the moment till I upgrade to Amarra or the like. Thanks all!

If your Fet Valve DAC is the new high bit rate version with a silver faceplate you can simply install the jumper link on the DAC board in the connected position and then the unit will play all bit rates to 192/24 automatically.

If this used unit is an older Fet Valve DAC from several years ago, it was built with the Philips 4X oversampling chip set and cannot play anything higher than 48/16 material.

Call me at 651-330-9871 next week for more help.

Thanks Frank, it is the newer version (silver faceplate).  I will give you a ring.

Actually Frank, I just moved the jumper myself.  I was totally easy.  I am about to test it here; I know you are busy so I will only call you if I have any problems.  Thanks again!

What is the effect on either 16/44.1 or 24/96 sources if the jumper is moved to all for 24/192 decoding?

Actually you will hear no difference in your 44K or 96K material at all with the jumper installed to enable 192K decoding.

We have come to realize that our original estimates as to the audible effect of slight difference in the internal digital filter effects caused by moving the jumper were overly cautious.

We have been shipping the DACs with the jumper installed for some time now and nobody can hear any difference, other than the fact that the jumper must be installed to enable 192K playback.

We consider the open position of the jumper to be just for internal setup and testing now.  Leave the jumper connected to both pins and enjoy the music.

Yeah, I can't hear a difference....It all sounds fantastic!

I mean really, this DAC sounds INCREDIBLE.  I just took out the PS Audio DL-III and the difference was night-and-day.  Not even in the same league.  My Redbook rips are fantastic on this DAC; I would not have believed the difference if I wasn't hearing it for myself.  Everything I have read is certainly true - an amazing piece of gear.  Cudos Frank.
