Stabilant 22a

Knowing that I might always be interested in "new" tweaks, a client told me that he has been thinking of trying  a product called Stabilant 22a

I did a little "Googling", and found a couple Audio Companies are already marketing it.

The troublesome flag I have come across is that one or two sources said that it is the same product or compound used in the Sumiko Tweek, back in the 70's-80's that some claimed caused corrosion or metal damage.

All the literature I found seems to say that this is not possible, but I'd rather be on the safe side.

Anyone have any experience or knowledge about this?

John,

That Tweek stuff was an amazingly good aid to sonics....it really was an enhancer for signals.  It stuck two metal parts together, well, like glue :o

My first TT was JVC JL-A20 belt drive.  After tarting it up with Mortite inside (10 lbs) it sounded great.  So, I took the Tweek I had around and Tweek'ed all the cartridge lead connections and inside the collared connector in the tonearm, too.  I was sloppy and just slobbered a dash in there...and screwed on the removable headshell.

The increase in fidelity, especially in bass was really good, really notable.

It sounded so good that I decided to haul my table down to my local dealer to fit a brand new Grace F-9e I had been lusting at (replacing the inexpensive ADC I had).  With a flick of his fingers on the turntable's collar...the headshell snapped clean off the tonearm.

The Tweek stuff got on the headshell bayonet part and bonded with the tonearm collar.  It's really effective stuff...I have played around with Caig De-Oxit, Caig ProGold, the Mapleshade silver grease and Cardas TC-2 over the years...none were as effective as the Tweek was, in my opinion.

But, be forewarned - it does a little too good of a job on some metal-to-metal surfaces  :(

I've also used Tweek (sold as Stabilant 22A in Canada), which is not a cleaner but a "contact enhancer," but I'm not so keen on it now. It's true that application of a small amount of this liquid to an electrical contact enhances the effectiveness of the contact, but, as the Stabilant 22A instructions warn, it should not be used if the metals are dissimilar. The caveat is very important; if you use Tweek between, say, a gold-plated RCA plug and an aluminum-alloy jack, the contact will be improved initially, but over time (weeks) the metals will react chemically with each other and the sound will show increased degradation. If you then clean the contacts, you'll find a black guck that looks just as awful as the system has started to sound.
