What a bonehead or maybe I am TT cursed
« on: 19 Jun 2007, 04:47 pm »
Table #1 a MMF-5 I sold about a month ago arrived at buyer's with a cracked dustcover. I bought the buyer a replacement. Second TT exploded over the Pacific a few weeks ago. I lost my shorts on that sale. Table number 3 a Rega P3 arrived yesterday. While unpacking, I broke the cantilever off the Dynavector 10x5 . Can my cartridge be retipped or am I SOL? sigh...

ETR,

You need to change your avatar to a Bambi or something.  The shark is not working for you.

ETR,

You can have it retipped but I don't have a clue what it would run. I know Len Gregory (aka The Cartridge Man) does retips with his own stylus profile. His stylus profile is fairly close to the Dynavector profile but you do get just a bit more low level detail retrieval from it (at least thats what I'm finding with his Music Maker compared to my DV-20XH).

Hi ETR,
I was thinking about using these guys:

I inquired about repairing a Dynavector cart and they said they could do it.

Good luck...

I guess we're in the same boat! I bought my #5 right before I moved, and it stayed in the box for a year and a half. When I finally got ready to set it up I found the dust cover broken, and the dealer was gone. Roy Hall wouldn't make it good because I couldn't find the reciept, and I've been real unhappy with Roy Hall ever since. Needless to say that's the last Music Hall T.T. I'll ever own.

The Dynavector importer (whose name I don't remember, but you can search for it) offers very good trade ins on old and damaged DV cartridges. You can buy a new replacement cartridge probably for the price of your retip.

Look him up and give him a call.

Enjoy,
Bob

Brian at needledoctor.com told me a trade-in Dynavector will get you 20% off a new Dynavector or an almost as good discount on a Benz with their trade-in program.

Thanks for the replies. As Bob said, the retipping costs including shipping are about the same as a trade in on the Dynavector at the Needle Doctor. I'm trying to buy back  :green: the Benz ACE cartridge I just sold someone-either that or I may try the Audio Technica 440al that people have been raving about here. Or if anyone here has a decent mm or high output mc cartridge they're not using...

Talk to Mike Pranka the Dynavector Importer.  I believe he is in St. Louis.

Wow the curse continues. The MMF-5 dustcover got sent to me by mistake today and it's broken in two places

If ever there was a case for someone saying vinyl is not worth it for me at this time, you might be it.  I applaud you for hanging in there and not getting too frustrated, I might have see it as a sign and moved on from vinyl for the moment.  But of course these thing sould happen with any particular piece(s) of gear but sure is funny that it's only with your TT.

I am on my 4th Dynavector. I started with a 10X5 which after 8 months met the Zerodust box and was replaced by Dynavector using the 20% trade-in discount. This 10X5 lasted 11 months, but one afternoon a thunderstorm came through and after a very close lightning strike (with the system off) the right channel produced only a hum. Dynavector replaced this one for free. (I now unplug my system during thunderstorms) While waiting for DV's decision I bought a Karat 17D2 MkII which lost it'd stylus after 7 months. Not wanting to use the 20% discount (still $700+) I opted for a low hours used Karat 17D2 Mk II at half the price. They say things come in 3's, so I guess the 4th is the keeper. Now I'm back to putting 2-300 hours of burn-in on the "new" cart.

Oh! that's the end of the record, gotta go.

Is it possible that Dynavector's lower end carts are "cheap" in construction?

I don't have enough experience with carts to say much about the construction.   The 10x5 is a wonderful sounding cart, but mine did have a well out of spec channel imbalance.  That was before I backhanded the cantilever while messing around with the suspension on my Gyro SE.  The cantilever on the 10x5 does seem somewhat vulnerable, but the Gyro doesn't help things with the tonearm sitting out there in empty space.
