What specs do I want on a server?
« on: 14 Jun 2007, 04:55 pm »
i'm getting an infrant, because it's easy and because i can afford it. not interested in doing it myself on the server side.

how much RAM do i want? i wont be using squeezebox, rather an offramp. would 256 MB be sufficient? i'm thinking of starting with 2 500GB drives, leaving myself two slots for an additional 1T later. should be enough to hold me over for a while...

Yes.  The Infrant NASs don't benefit much from extra RAM.  They're dog ass slow no matter what you do to them.

Ok, back up a second...

I didn't know WTF an "offramp" was, so I looked it up.  It's just a network interface to a DAC.  Runs only via iTunes and limits you to two or three file formats.

So that means you'll also need a computer -either a PC or a Mac - on which to run iTunes.  The Infrant NAS is just a network _file_ server.  They've jiggered it to run SlimServer if you want (trust me, it's so slow that you don't), but other than that, it's primary purpose in life is just to store files on your network.

Are you sure that's what you want?

the offramp is from empirical audio. i'll be using it w/ a wadia dac. yeh, i already have a laptop, i just need a simple server that can store and serve the music files. wont be running anything on it, i'll have my laptop for that.

Ok, glad to see you have it figured out.  That's an excellent use for an NAS.  You won't need more than the standard memory that comes with it.

Be careful to keep your music library backed up, though.  If you read through some past threads you'll see the reasoning behind why.  RAID only protects against drive failures.  It won't protect your data against things like accidental deletions, file corruption, fire, flood, theft, beer (see flood). :-)
