I just got new Macbook Pros for me and my new wife! We love them. So much easier and fun to use than a PC.  Any way it has Digital optical output as well as an analog out. Any suggestions on speaker setups? I'm kicking myself because Comp USA is going out of business and they had a pretty nice Jamo stereo setup  with Ipod dock for $150 originally $400 that I passed up.  STUPID STUPID STUPID   

Any way I'm looking for something that sounds good, small footprint, not a lot of desk space, potentially something with a sub would work under my desk.  optical input is nice, but not necessary.

Congratulations on the marriage and the new computers.

I recently bought my daughter a MacBook Pro to use for college.

She had been using a decent Compaq notebook that sold for about $1600.00 two years ago.

To help her out with a dorm room system, I also picked up a used set of Monsoon MM-1000 off of E-Bay for around $100.00.



They were in perfect shape. This makes the third set of Monsoon computer speakers I have bought. They use pretty much the same planar driver that is used as a mid panel in your VMPS 626Rs. The powered woofer is great for desktop tunes. We compared the same music played on her Compaq and on the Mac. The Mac is FAR better sounding.

I bought the AE5's for my college daughter to use with her Macbook Pro (and her roommates).  They use an Airport express plugged into one input and the dock for the other.  Any one of them can stream from their own ipod and/or Macbook to the speakers, including volume.  It's a great setup, they love it, and no real need for a subwoofer at least in a dorm room.  They do need to be placed slightly away from rear walls due to the ports.

Here are a pair of MM-700s

MM-700

They are very similar to the MM-1000. Same panel, but a smaller woofer and different covering for the panels. I also have a set of those

I'd rather build a set of bookshelf monitors, I've never had good luck with anything advertising itself as "computer speakers".

When I was in the dorms, I had a pair of JBL S38's running off of a NAD 3020 and an Adire Rava tucked under a shelf. Beat the pants off any Logitech or even Klipsch "computer" setup.

No replacement for (cone) displacement

What is your budget?

There are many active monitors that would make great computer speakers. Check out Samson studio monitors. They make pretty good active monitors for the price. If you can afford it, NHT makes a good set called M00s that would blow the pants off any ipod gimmick speakers. Also check out BlueSky Media Desk 2.1

Thanks for the advice guys, but I already bought the monsoons.  I can always tweak them, though I'm pretty sure I'll just plug them in and never think about them again.  I'm really just using them for games and music when I'm sitting at my PC, otherwise I'll plug my compy into my main system.
