General Squeezebox woes..
« on: 11 May 2007, 12:34 pm »
Not looking for any answers because I don't think I can articulate my issues good enough through this medium.  Just griping.  How can something work SO well for over a year and then just start giving issue after issue.

Types of issues?

Connectivity?

Notice how well the Sox are doing since your SB has been acting up.  I hope your SB keeps acting up all summer. Don't fix it.

Yup mainly.  I rebooted and the wireless stopped working.  Now I have this longass wire running through my apt which the woman LOVES.  Luckily she like music more then she hates the wire.  I put everything to the factory reset and still cannot get it to connect.  The SB sees the network but just can't connect.  Maybe its my router I grabbed one from a friend and will see if that works.  If the SB can see the network can the router still be bad?  Now even when I am wired sometimes slimserver can't find the player etc.  I can usually fix that easy but it is really bumming me out.  I have been preaching this thing like gospel to everyone that will listen and now mine works like shit.  Oh well life is good.

When I moved into my new place I had trouble getting the wireless to connect.  What worked for me was to temporarily set up the SB3 closer to the wireless router.  For the initial setup, having a stronger signal seemed to help.  Once the initial connection was made then it had no trouble connecting in the location where it wouldn't work before.

No guarantees but worth a shot.

I am having issues with both my SBs.  One is <7' from the router.

I had similar problems recently. My SB3 just could not find the slimserver. I tried everything - rebooting, factory default, etc. I unplugged the power cable feeding the SB3 and left it that way for an hour or two. Reconnected and it worked fine!

I had trouble with one of my SBs connecting to SlimServer after the latest round of Windows updates, earlier this week.

I always run "Tune-up Utilities"  http://www.tune-up.com/ after each update.

Another very good program is CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

Each of those programs usually find some "problems" or conflicts in the registry after updates.

After running the "Tune-up", I reset my router and checked the IP assigned to my music server (I use dynamic IP).

Sure enough it had changed and the SB couldn't find it. I hard re-booted the SB (unplugged the power from it), did the factory reset (hit the "add" button when the SB first displays SqueezeBox on it's screen) and then went through the whole set-up including the assigning of IPs.

All is well, now.

I routinely check out 6-8 SBs a week through my system and I have had little to no problems having them connect and stay connected for extended periods of time. I did spend a lot of time trying different routers before settling on the NetGear WPN824.

I also replaced my wireless telephones with 5.8 Mhz models. I am far enough away from my neighbors that their phones don't bother my wi-fi. There are up to 6 different networks able to be picked up from various areas of my house. Luckily, the SB doesn't seem to mind them.

You can use a static IP for your music server and this "should" prevent troubles when the computer restarts after updates, etc.

If you are suddenly having issues with two SBs, it's highly unlikely they are the problem.  I'd recommend you look at other factors, like the router (which in my experience is the cause of nearly all wireless connectivity problems anyway).

A reason more to keep that old trusty CDP around :thumb:

PS:  This validates my point of selling my SBox 2 around 1 1/2 years ago.

Even with these issues the SB is FAR better then a cdp.  I will never have one in my system again.

My CDP gathers dust.  I'll never go back to a CDP again.

If you know your way around your router, I recommend setting a Static address (Actually reserving it) linked to the MAC address of your Slimserver, So that everytime that PC boots it gets the same address from the Router.  I had a period where the SB firmware prevented me from accessing my wireless.  I too went to 5.8gHz phones... My old Dlink wireless SUCKED!!! my pc's and my slimservers didn't connect.... that's in the trash now.. So if you have some old wireless access point move on especially if you have neighbors with cordless phones..

Oh yeah try changing your wireless channel number on the router till the performance improves. .if it is set for channel 6 try 12...or 11.

Thanks for starting the thread sta9fan.  8)

Thanks Wayne for the tips.   :thumb:

Thanks Bemopti123 for your honesty.

I gave up for now my RWA modded SB3 a year ago due mostly network related problems, but other issues as well.  One of which, that is seldom mentioned relates to convenience.  You can't take the SB3 with you (without hauling the PC, etc. with you).  And you can't just push a couple of buttons and have music.  And you can't just pop in a CD, it must be ripped first.  And any A/C power abberation can cause all sorts of headaches throughout.  The Olive music servers take care of most of these issues.

Obviously I'm not a computer geek (sure wish I was more of one though).

The value of that skill is highly debatable!  8)  Let the engineers make it so you don't need to be a geek, as with iPhone, or as you've discovered, Olive Server. When I researched SB it was biggest bang for buck and had better sound than Olive which has apparently improved a lot since then. I still don't like SB for the same reasons you mention, but also for the GUI, and the server speed required for seemless operation. Running slimserver on my ReadyNAS is too slow and starting to try my patience as the slim server grows larger. I will switch to Sonos/DAC this year. I have a CDP that I will upgrade to for disc popping.

I have over 30,000 songs and everyone raved about the Sonos interface, so I bought one to compare to my squeezebox and it's interface is not as effective managing huge amounts.. you sit there spinning your finger around the Ipod styleclick wheel trying to scroll through just one letter.
The Sonos hardware setup and wireless were a breeze to setup I must say... like 5 minutes and I was done..
I loved the heft of the remote too.

But when it all came down to it my Tablet PC and my Palm using wireless and a web browser to access my music are the fastest and coolest way to use the squeezebox instead of the remote and the small display.. and yes I did have to buy a faster PC to display album covers (www.techbargains.com daily Dell deals) versus a NAS setup.  I'm actually thinking of using a NAS and a faster PC accessing my collection on the NAS.

Anyway you slice it the Squeezebox has made me listen more to my music than any other tweak in my system.

I will say that going wired to imbedded Slimserver in my ReadyNAS made accessing albums much faster.

I would check to see if your wireless router has a firmware upgrade available.  I was having a lot of problems with my Transporter after loading Slimserver 6.5.2.  My D-link wireless router, provided by my ISP, had a firmware date of 2005, and they locked it to prevent upgrades.  I just replaced my router and could not believe how much better things were running.

So...if your wireless router has old firmware, it's possible that upgrading it will help...
