Suggestions needed on Johns Manville products
« on: 1 Mar 2007, 05:22 am »
I called a local Johns Mansville distributor (similar to Owens Corning) and told him I was interested in buying fiberglass panels to make acoustic treatments. He said a lot of the movies theaters buy R300 and he asked how much I wanted. (said it was 8x4 but sounded like he'd order smaller sizes and perhaps different SKUs)

Is that the product I should get?  I just laid down fake hardwoods in finished basement and have no treatments so I know I need something. Can anyone offer advice?

300 is fine.  814 is also a good OC703 substitute.

I'm about to pull the trigger on 814, 2" thick with FSK foil on one side @ $1.16\ft  I plan to double up on corners and do single sheets at reflection points and possibly at the ceiling. Do I leave the foil or is it easy to remove?

I'd have to wait a month and special order if I wanted unfaced product. Thoughts anyone?

Leave the foil... it is easier to work with and doesn't harm bass absorption.

For reflection points, if you're mounting directly on the wall, just turn the foil back against the wall.

For the panels you're going to double up, at least pull the foil from the inner layer so the only foil is on the side facing the room.  If you want to have them be full range, pull the foil off both pieces.

Here is the front view of the room. Berber carpet is gone; replaced by fake hardwoods and center is removed from top of TV. Speakers replaced by ONIX mini Stratas. I was thinking about doubling up in front corners http://www.av123forum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=1094&limit=recent

Things I'd do to that room.

- Move the bookcase.  It's causing things to be too close together and will not allow you to keep symmetry left to right when treating corners and refleciton points - not to mention getting a slap back off the inside of the case right at the speaker and front wall.

- Front corners (real ones) at least 4-6" thick floor to ceiling and at least 1' wide.  Also I'd look at thickening up at the wall ceiling intersection up front.

- Treat the whole front wall with 2".  Speakers are so close to the wall you're definitely getting some nasty SBIR issues.

- Treat the side wall(s) with 2" not only at reflection points but also directly beside the speakers - again, SBIR issues.

- Try to get the seat out farther if at all possible.  Treat the rear wall of the room with 4" but with the FSK face exposed to the room.

Thanks Bryan - I REALLY appreciate that advice.

I'm definitely a novice on acoustics so I can use the help . Unfortunately the built-in bookcase is attached to wall\drywall but maybe I could move it. (the backside of case is left wall of enclosed HVAC) Was worried about how it affected sound and you confirmed. Looks like I need to measure and doublecheck case construction and then figure how many boxes to purchase.

UPDATE: Bought a box of 2" 814 and a box of 2" 817.

Have to think it through but thought is to do 18"w front corners 4" thick floor to ceiling using 817, 12"w 4" thick front ceiling using 814, 24"w 2" thick floor to ceiling using 814 to cover front part bookcase by right speaker. 2' x 4' x 2" for left speaker reflection point and probably 4" backwall. That should be a good starting point...

I just put up some temporary floor to ceiling superchunks in the corners and temp panels on sides at reflection points. WOW what a difference - adding the reflection points really brought everything into focus. I'll add pics when I'm done but this has been the BEST money I've spent so far on audio  :green:

Sounds good - congrats.  Just remember that in a 2 channel room, you don't want to fall into the 'if a little is good more is better' trap.  A 2 channel room should still be relatively lively in comparison with a home theater for instance.  Finish off the corner absorbers and live with it for a while.

Wouldn't it be nice if all your audio investments made that kind of difference for the money?

The funny part about a room that's treated well is that all future $ spent on the system may seem to be $ well spent too.

the domino effect that a treated room puts into motion makes these tweaks real high on my priority list.
