Play Station 3 Question
« on: 10 Feb 2007, 08:38 pm »
Hi,

I was wondering how good the PS3 performs as a standard DVD player & Blue Ray player.  I am looking to relieve my Modwright Sony 9000ES from DVD playback.  I have to figure that DVD playback would be better than the 5 year old 9000ES.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Tom

That's a tough question with respect to Blu-ray.  Most wouldn't have two BRD players to compare.  I personally think the DVD playing is slow and somewhat inconvenient to use on a PS.

I would tend to think the 9000ES is still superior.  Age doesn't necessarily imply its inferior to new gear - that is unless you're comparing it to another high-quality DVD player, which the PS3 is not.

My experience is that the PS3 is a very high quality DVD player.  I haven't compared it to something like a Modwright 9000ES but it was a shockingly good player compared to the run of the mill DVD players that I had around the house.  Standard DVDs played through a projector where amazingly good and recreated a theater presentation very well.  The difference on a CRT TV were less noticeable but still in favor of the PS3.  The downside is that the user interface is a bit clunky and at least on my PS3, by the end of the movie the PS3 heats up enough that the fan comes up with some noticeable fan noise.

If you concern about the clunky user interface with your controller, you can always buy a remote control made for PS3 for around CAN$39 at best buy.  It has all the buttons and turn you PS3 to a regular DVD/Blueray player.

The PS3 is a fantastic BD player..and I have directly compared it to the Samsung, Philips and Sony players.
Its  on par with the Sony player and better than the other two for picture quality.

I had a Modwright 9000 signature and don't remember any specific improvement to the dvd section as far as mods went.
I would say the PS3 will be at least as good now as the 9000 Modwright... and probably noticibly better once the upcoming firmware upgrade for upconversion to 1080p gets here.
What will really be interesting is comparing the SA-CD playback of the two players IMO.

My ps3 has never gotten warm enough to turn the fan on were it was audible from a couple of feet away.
Maybe its because its winter and my theater is in the basement with the PS3 in an open rack at the bottom....but I am always baffled by those that say there PS3 gets hot or ever makes any noise.
Our 360 in the same rack.....sounds like a 747 taking off in comparison

I got a PS3 about a week or so ago and installed the new v. 1.81 firmware update (which added 1080p/24 Hz output as well as 1080p upconversion and a meriad of other things). It mates beautifully with my JVC RS1 1080p PJ. The one drawback, and it is a major drawback, is the fan noise. Evidently the latest update increased fan noise, but mine is seriously loud. Having said that, it's been 100' outside for the last week or so and the ambient temp in the HT is in the upper 80's (poor HVAC design). Once the PJ gets going, it probably ups the ambient temp to the lower 90's, so it's no wonder the PS3 fans are roaring. Having said that, the RS1, which is thought to be loud, sounds quiet compared to the PS3 from the seated position. That's significant when you consider the PJ is only 3' from my head whereas the PS3 is about 11' away.
