iMod break in - Silently?
« on: 27 Apr 2007, 03:21 pm »
I'd like to break-in my iMod in my bedroom using an integrated amp. Have speakers to use if needed, but...

Can I do this without having to hear it?

I'm sure this has been covered on the forum.

Thanks, Don

Hi Don,

See: http://www.redwineaudio.com/iMod.html

The paragraph directly above the pricing info explains this in detail.

Best regards,

Vinnie

...and just to be sure...
The iMod is hooked up to the battery charger pod which is plugged into the wall outlet. It is hooked up to the integrated amp via an AudioPath iPod cable. The integrated is plugged into wall outlet but not turned on. Imod is on repeat.
Ok?

Hi Don,

Well, I'm not sure if you actually need to select the input that you are using on your integrated amp.  If the input select is via a mechanical switch, set the switch to that input (in order to connect the iMod to the load, ie, the input impedance of the preamp section).

If the input select is done via relay (usually the case if you need to push a botton on the front panel and you hear a relay click), you might need to leave your integrated amp ON in order to keep the relay turned ON.  However, you don't need to have the speaker outputs turned ON... and if there is no switch to turn them off, you can simply turn the volume to MIN or use a MUTE if you have that feature.

I think thats about it! :)

Hi Vinnie , it only has one set of inputs, no selector switch. Just ON switch and volume control. So no need to turn on?

Correct... no need to turn it on.

Just plug in the interconnects and let it cook! :flame:

Hi Vinnie, after ~ 280 hours break-in I set the iMod up in my system. It sounds good, spacious and open, with still good firmness to the instruments. Bass depth seemed about the same as my cdp/dac, so no apparent issue there.
There is a problem with my old amps inputs being too close together for the ipod cable's fat plugs to fit, so I had to add cheapo cable and adapters, will work that out later. I won't be able to spend any real time listening and A/B'ing with my cdp/dac to hear the differences until the weekend or later, but sounds very promising! I'm not worried about any lack of sq.
I'll be trying it with a gainclone too, am considering a tube pre for the gc at some point.
Thanks, Vinnie!
