I tried wired and didn't hear a difference.

But I have tweaked the slim server settings to not transcode alac to mp3.

By default slim has the option to do that so you have to change that setting.

That is one possible explanation some people hear a difference?

Trying wired is not enough.  You must use a really good S/PDIF cable 1.5m long.  The cable adds jitter because of:

1) dispersion
2) losses
3) impedance mismatch
4) B/W limitations
5) too short or too long - see:

I was speaking of my transporter so I don't need a S/PDIF cable. I use xlr analog out from transporter, using it's excellent internal DAC.

I understand now, wired network versus wireless network.  They should be identical except for the possibility of drop-outs due to other wireless networks and interference nearby.  I'm glad you are liking the Transporter.  Not my favorite DAC chip though.
