SB3 Connection issues?!?
« on: 14 Apr 2007, 03:58 pm »
So I have been using a SB for quite some time now with no issues.  This morning I rebooted my music server and not things are not working.  My router seems to be working.  I can see my other computer and when I changed the name of the network it shows up on the SB.  So the SB can see the network.  It just won't connect.  I put in the encryption password and it just won't connect. Any suggestins would be wonderful I have no clue what could have happened.

Thanks
Kris

The music server may have leased a different IP address when it rebooted.  You can determine the music server's IP address by launching a DOS prompt by going to the RUN command in the start menu and entering cmd or command depending on the version of Windows, then once you have a DOS box, type the following   ipconfig  It should tell you the address and mask and default gateway (the address of the router)
Next turn on your SB and go through setup and make sure that the address it thinks the Slimserver is on agrees w/ what you just found out.

So it should be auto detecting the ip but I think that may be the problem.  I just have to figure out how to manually input the ip.

What I do is reboot everything, including the SBs.  I hit the "off" button on the remote for several seconds, which causes the SB to reboot.  (Of course, you can always unplug/replug.) It'll get a new IP address and then find the server.

What I think happens is that the server gets assigned to an address that's the same as the SB.  The SB doesn't get a new address until you reboot the SB.  This has happened to me on several occasions.

This was also my own issue to connect to my musicserver. In addition to lcrim comment, after ipconfig with ip address you also need to ping your router and your music server ip addresses (i.e. ping 192.168.1.5). If no time out that means they are connected with your PC or laptop. You need to see if your SB3 does have the music server ip address after rebooting it then you need to reboot your PC or laptop and type in the address box like for example 192.168.1.5:9000 or whatever number ip address you had before. Then wait and click your music folder to see if they work together. Good luck.

That's why I always set my music server to have a static IP.  You can set the SB to have a static IP too but it's easier if you don't have to - especially when you want to take it somewhere else.

I'll figure it out I am sure.  Right now I just wired it up.  Gotta have music on a Saturday!

I found that unplugging the mains feeding the SB3 and leaving if for about half an hour, returning to hook it all up again worked for me. If you just switch it off, the SB3 has some kind of residual "memory" that should be totally wiped out.

Also, connection problem #1 by far...
make sure a firewall hasn't been turned on.

So how do I manually input my IP address on the SB3.  I am really not so hot at computers.  How do I find the IP I need to use?  IP config?

Wired is a bummer

You really don't need a static IP for the SB.  Just use a static for the server so the SB can always find it.  Let the SB be 'served' an IP automatically via DHCP.

that does not seem to be working.  If my issue is a changed IP then why would it not just pick it up?

It's that the IP on the server changed and the SB is still looking at the old SERVER IP.  Setting a static IP on the SB won't do anything to help it see the server.

You'll have to go back through the setup of the SB and reselect the server and verify the server IP at that point.

Ok so why if I reset the SB to factory settings does it not just connect like it did when I first got it?  I put in the encrytion code and it just times out.  It sees the network but cannot connect to it.  Man I wish I was better with computers.  I have no idea how I got this working the first time.

Can't say - sorry.  You're using wired - correct?  It's seeing the server?   Did you reset it to use a wired connection instead of wireless?  Also, you shouldn't have to use an encryption code for a wired setup I don't believe IIRC.

I am only using it wired because I rather listen to music then fiddle for hours.  It works wonderfully wired.  All my issues are wireless.

Thanks

If a wired connection works and you've changed nothing else (i.e. the Squeezebox is still getting its IP address dynamically) then you're having wireless problems.  These can be tough to troubleshoot - maybe caused by some interference from a  neighbor's new wireless network.  Or maybe your wireless router isn't working properly, or maybe the wireless card in the SB is on the fritz.

Try the following (in order):
  • Power cycle the wireless router.  Unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and wait a minute for it to come back up completely. Then try to connect the SB wirelessly again.
  • Do a factory reset of the Squeezebox. Unplug the Squeezebox power, point the remote at it and hold down the  ADD button on the remote while plugging the power back in. Go through the SB wireless setup, reentering your old info and then see if it connects.
  • Change the channel being used by the wireless router.  It's probably currently using channel 6.  Change it to one of the channels at either end of the range - 1 or 11.  Then try connecting once again.  Try both channel 1, then 11 and see which gives the stronger wireless signal.

I don't know which device is wired and which is wireless.  It's not that important.  Coming back to the original question, why can't the SB find the server?  You can go to the server and determine what IP address it has, I covered that in an earlier post.
Then you have to reboot the SB and when it gets to the point where it is searching for the Slimserver, I think by going up and down arrows you can choose to set the IP address of the Slimserver (which you already know.)  You need to supply three digits for each of the octets in the IP address and it should be good to go.

Thanks everyone.  I think the problem may be that the PC I am currebtly using as a music sever has just shit the bed so to speak.
