The Great LCD coverup

I am about to mount a 46" LCD to the wall with a close clearance mount.  I would like to place something in front of it to block the reflective glass during critical music listening.  Does anyone have any experience with that both concerning how much improvement it makes and how to do it?  Is the glass much worse than drywall?  My speakers are panels and there is a significant rear wave.

I thought about thick drapes but I could not find curtain rods with adequate stand-out from the wall.  I even searched some HT sites.  The drapes would have to stack to one side and the whole rod/drape thing starts to get expensive.  I am not sure how effective it would be.

The other thought I had was make some kind of bracket to attach to the wall mount and hang a removable acoustic panel from it.  Not as elegent or as easy to use as drapes but perhaps more effective and I would not have the excess drapes (the stack area) behind my right speaker when the drapes are closed.  I could see taking the panel up and down could be a real nuisance.  Especially since my equipment rack is in the way.

Lots of choices.  If you want to go cheap just go to a fabric store (or a place that sells the foam stuff that sits on top of your mattress) and get enough thick quilted type mat'l to throw over it.  I did that for a bit over the glass doors on my audio/video furniture.  Depending on how high you mount the TV and the sonic atributes of your room (have you measured?) there are other options.  For example, you can go to places like  www.readyacoustics.com (or to a local place that sells insulation) and gets some Owens Corning 703 for midrange absorption along with a bag to cover it (they look nice (I have 6 in my room besides bass treatments) and if you don't want to hang them on the wall (hooks come with the covers from readyacoustics.com) you can make stands for them.  I just went to Lowes and bought some oak (I think 1x6s and 1x4s and stained them too) already cut to two feet and used the 1x6s for the base and screwed the 1x4s to them at the appropriate width so that the readyacoustics.com stuff slid into them snugly.

Phil,

I already have six 2'x4' acoustic panels so I know their value.  The issue is how do I elegantly and conveniently mount one in front of the tv so I can easily remove and replace as needed.  My equipment rack is in the way so I cannot use a stand.

I also have TacT so I can measure changes but that won't tell me what my ears will.  Subtle nuances are lost in the gross frequency measurements.  I find that TacT works best with a little help from room treatment.

Any way you can put it on a pivot so it hugs the ceiling when you're watching TV and pivot down to be in position when you want to listen?

Hello Bryan,

Not feasable.  My ceiling is cathedral style.  Even if I had a typical 8' flat ceiling the TV is not mounted that high so the panel would have to drop down considerably. I have no idea how to reach to make a ceiling pivot work.

I was hoping to find someone who had already done what I am considering.  The TV wall mount bracket I ordered should be delivered next week.  After installing it I will know just how much I want to pursue the acoustic treatment project.
