PICCOLO A Little Late
« on: 10 Apr 2007, 09:00 pm »
Just a head's up here, the PICCOLO and ARCHIVER machines are going to be delayed several weeks.  Turns out the 2SK389 are not available anymore, and I designed the circuit boards around the original package (which I had bought dozens of several years ago cheap).  Basically, I designed myself into a corner.  After much searching and dealing with part brokers, nobody can come up with production quantities for me.  So I'm upgrading to the newer LSK389 from Linear Systems.

The new part is just as good electrically, the problem is that the package options and pinouts are different.  That means I have to do yet another round of layouts to make sure I get it right.  Such is in process.   I should have new PICCOLO proto boards on order by the end of the week.  Will also invest in production quantities of the JFETs.

At the moment, it looks like I will use the SO-8 surface mount part.  That's ok, as they were going to be included in the half-kit anyway.  I may as well solder them in place.  Not sure yet what half-kit pricing will be yet, $69, $79, or $89 (also includes some hardware).

Hey, that's OK!!  "Stuff" happens.  I am still feelin' like I am getting something that was personally engineered for me!  That alone makes the PICCOLO worth waiting for.  A lot better than my "ethnic-engineering" one!  Don't rush.  Just do the JH thing....

Will I be able to add the Piccolo to my Cornet2?

When the Piccolo becomes available, will I be able to add it to my Cornet2 (internally)?

What are the expected dimensions?

Only if you keep the loading at 47k.  The problem is that you have to run the input cables past the power transformer and in current mode it will pick up hum.  It works with the original CORNET design because connectors were on opposite side.

Works fine externally.
