One of the advantages, and disadvantages of most Linux's is the bewildering variety/possibilities for configuring EVERY possible and imaginable way of "appearance". Unless you know what you are doing it is better to leave the default settings. I got carried away once and screwed it up so thoroughly that I had to re-enstall as the only way to find my way backwards! The fact that many many people contribute to the Linux community, and their applications and ideas (visual or otherwise) find themselves willynilly added onto every Distro (although there is supposed to be some kind of overseeing) means that there is no monolithic "whole" as found in Windows or Mac. This results in some rather strange things; some applications appear very sleek and well thought out, whereas others are primitive and simplistic. Likewise there is a plethora of "things" that appear totally useless or duplications. Too many cooks stirring the pot you might say. The "corporate" distros like Suse, Mandriva, Fedora, etc. attempt to put some order in this by proposing a more minimalistic, unified approach, with varying degrees of success. While there is a lot to be said for the Microsoft/MAc approach, as it takes a lot of guess work out of the equation, it also takes the wacky, fun, "world" free for all out of it that Linux proposes. This is not to say that Linux is created and maintained by a bunch of amateurs, far from it, but since it is in constant evolution, one can easily get a serious headache! Let's say that Linux is best approached by those having a good grip on Mac and Window and who are willing to relearn and be challenged. I think there is a good analogy to be made with the idea that Linux falls on the audiophile, inquisitive side of the fence, rather than those who just go out and buy a read to go system.

I have been seeing Ubuntu  a lot in the geek news very recently.

I am about to d/l linux for some of my older PCs and to do some wireless network testing.

Can anyone shed light on what this is all about, and whether Ubuntu is a good one to go with for a newbie (With a 7 year old copy of the Linux Bible)

There are some great threads on www.slimdevices.com on this.  I am a total noob and used ClarkConnect 4.0 with great success, just using the threads there.  My setup's not perfect but it plays music, runs on over the hill hardware, and runs unattended for months without touching it.  I was worried the other day that if it did hiccup I couldn't remember how to get it started again  :)

I don't think so. I believe Ubunto is fairly geeky and a 7 year old Linux bible will be totally out of date.
Try PCLinux. It's very nice and friendly and up-to date.

Mark Shuttleworth's has embraced the philosophy of making Linux accessable to the masses
hence the name, so "geeky" Ubuntu is not! Also the update cycle is more frequent than all other distros except for maybe Gentoo.

The last time I checked PCLinuxOS (TexStar) didn't have a rpm build for Slimserver in their package repository, so you would have to google install through the core Mandriva distro.

I have been using Ubuntu for 2 years now, slimserver install was easy.

Ubuntu is targeted toward the newbie audience. My girlfriend uses ubuntu and is pretty happy. She was using gentoo previously but was frustrated because the learning curve was too high, and she didn't want to spend the time to learn the intricacies of the distro. That said, i'd take gentoo over ubuntu any day; however, i've been using linux daily for several years on several different machines.

A seven year old book on linux will likely not be useful and will probably lead to more confusion than help. The ubuntu forums seem to be very good and accommodating to newbies.
