Bugle Pro & Clarinet Line Stage Combo
« on: 17 Mar 2007, 12:28 am »
Hello everyone,

After about two years of lurking in various forums and researching several DIY kits, I've decided on the Hagerman product line. I know that I will order the Clarinet, but I am waffling between the Bugle Pro and the Cornet2. I really want the variable equalization of the Bugle Pro, and feel it's important to have linearity and bandwidth early in the sound chain. Of course, tube-devotees will have their 2 cents...
Also, I would like to house whatever phono pre I decide on in the same chassis as the Clarinet, so anyone who's got some advice regarding this procedure would be is extremely welcomed to comment.

Best,
Benjamin

I have the Bugle Pro and like it a lot. I thought the curves would be good to have. I use them infrequently but they can clear up a recording or change a strident one into a listenable one. The curves can be used as straight eualization or like a tone control for then the recording is too shrill. Just cut the treble. Now, I can't explain this well but when you cut the treble by altering the curve it is better than changing the tone in that the the recordings stays in phase it seems more precise from what I remember about the sound when I did have tone controls. But that could just be my head.

It looks like the Piccolo headamp will be a great mate for the Bugle so building it down to 40dB starting out for reduced noise, rather than the 50dB I did, is a gain. [pardon the pun]

There is the ability to opamp swap and as soon as my "Burson discrete opamp" arrives I will take the Bugle to what I think is it's logical end. .... then I will build the Cornet and have two phono preamps.

Thanks Pat.
I was going to opt for the passive DIY Jensen step-up transformer project (http://www.10audio.com/diy_jensen44.htm) for use with the Bugle/Clarinet combo. I am fairly inexperienced when it comes to electronics, but I am under the impression that a .3mv signal (or any low-output MC signal) would be better served by a passive step-up than an active one. If this isn't necessarily the case, I welcome corrections.
The OpAmp stuff is interesting. Your link will make for good reading.

Thanks,
Benjamin

How many dual opamps did you order from Burson? The bugle pro parts list indicates it uses 3...

OPA2134's are soldered into positions 1 & 2. The last output position is slotted and used for rolling.
I ordered just one dual to replace my OPA2888P in U3.
