I agree.  Solid state sucks... :jester:

What an assinine statement coming from a so called dealer!!!!

Ok, you're right...tubes suck... :jester:

Yes, they are trying to suck in air but can't. Yet still they try and eventually some succeed at their own demise.

Hey moron:

OVERTURE is almost directly across the street from tweeter - but a block farther north on 202

I've been on 202 many times and it's a busy place - easy to miss something with so much there to see.

I never found Overture but visited the new Tweeter on 202 (Delaware). As I walked in I was overwhelmed by....

Fabaudio, next time pm me before you arrive, I live 7 mins. away and will meet you there or for lunch!  Actually, both Tweeters and Overture are on the north bound side of 202 but, Tweeters is about 2 miles north of Overture, almost into Pa.   Overture has been heavily HT for some time now and although they have a TT for system demos and sell a few selected LP's, they carry no TT supplies at all.  Happily, Burt's, right next door carries some TT supplies, DisCleaner(?) for the most part...

Discussions with a long time (20+ years) saleman at the only stereo outlet within an hour's drive revealed that he knew little about tubes, although he had a couple on the floor (one was a vintage piece on static display).  And he seemed totally ignorant of audio forums or any of the brands here at AC.  The store has sold Klipsch for years and the guy couldn't recall ever hooking them up to a tube amp.  He barely knew of SETs and had never heard of Sonic Impact/the other little Tripaths, or a Squeeze Box.

I visit there occasionally to see living dinosaurs in their natural environment (the store has never installed air conditioning) and re-visit my younger days.

I think these Tube vs. SS arguments are hilarious because I have found several Tube units that were truly excellent and SS units that were also excellent...

There may have been some different aspects between the gear I liked (liquidity, dynamics (micro & macro) and all the other audiophile buzzwords we are so fond of) but at the bottomline, in the gear that I liked they generally sounded more alike than different.

The issues that I look for is, does that "extra something" (in whichever type) warrant whatever price differentials that may be involved? Will it hold up? (I usually buy fairly long term) Is it modular in some way or another? etc.

Any way that's my take on things... for anyone else, well YMMV.

Happy Listening!

Pretty funny. Without even getting into the pissing match over tubes vs. solid state, I gotta say that Linn is one of the most overrated and overpriced companies I've ever experienced. That goes for the speakers and the components. Not that they're alone, that's for sure, but if that's the dealers premier line, I'd be rolling on the floor with laughter.

I think bad audio equipment sucks.

I definately prefer tubes to SS, but I also prefer SS in systems that need 6.8 gigawats of power.  My Radii sounds like crap on the RM40s vs. an AVA or multiple other SS amps with some major cajones.

I concur.

Regarding the actual point of this topic - which was it now, uh Overture or Tweeters or was it liquids?

Nevermind.

It depends.  Some bad gear is some of the best stuff out there, and there is some really, really great stuff that really sucks.  A lot of average kit is just so-so, really.

Your handle and tagline are pretty killer.

Hey!

I think that is the only word the saleman could think of at the moment that is the opposite of Solid State

If it ain't in Solid State than it must be in Liquid state. Good think he didn't say Tube are too Gassy!

Take care,

Personally the tubes vs SS argument I find tiring, because it hardly ever holds up except in certain circumstances.   It is more about how it works with the particular system.    Tubes can sound amazing or amazingly awful, just as SS.  However an all SS system sometimes is a bit aggressive, but not always.  A lot has to do with the design.   I think a lot of generalizations are made to make decisions easier, in pyschology, that is known as heuristics, decision rules to make decisions simpler than they really are.

Tubes are better than SS is really a heuristic argument.  Some truth may be embedded in that that leads one to develop biases over time and then ultimately the appeal of tubes is more than the technology itself.   All that said, I like tube diy because it is more interesting to me.  This is my own diy/learning bias at this point in time, that I freely admit and embrace.
