Okay, if you could go back in time...

...to see any artist/composer perform, who would it be?  Could be classical or rock, living or dead.  You can't affect anything or bring 'em back, either.

Oh, yeah; it can't be Jimi Hendrix! :nono:

Who would you like to see?

My top choices: The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem in the late 50's or early 60's and Rachmaninov on piano performing his own Piano Concerto No. 2.  Runners up: Judas Priest about '85 & Pagannini playing whatever the hell he wanted to play.

Well I have to second the Rachmaninov.

I'd probably have to do that one, but it would be a close tie to seeing Robert Johnson in some steamy hot Mississippi joint late one night doing all of his songs.

Van Halen, 1984... When this came to my town, I was not allowed to go by my parents.  I heard the show kind of sucked anyway because Eddie played keyboards mostly.... So, I'd have to pick the city as well....

Queen, Wembley stadium....

Neil Diamond back when he was good.... Saw him recently and I just don't like the way his voice has changed.  I have found just the opposite with Elvis Costello, whose voice has gotten better with time.

That's about it... for concerts...

But, my fantasy dream whatever about music isn't to go back in time and see people... Mine is to be around a band who plays their songs without amplification.  Maybe I could learn a little more about playing guitar and join in a little now and then.  But, most importantly, just hear the band raw, right in front of me.  That would do it for me.

That's why I try to reproduce that kind of sound in my hifi and get irritated with concerts.

Ha, when I read the title I said to myself, Pink Floyd.

I would love to see a live Wall Concert #1.

Others are:
Led Zep
The Beatles
Clasical, I would rather go back and live in the same city as the famous composers so I could witness their crazyness/brilliance.
Various bars and solons featuring jazz, ragetime, etc.

I saw VH just after Roth left and I saw Roth on his own, too.  Neither had the "magic" that made them so awesome when they were together.

Judas Priest was at their peak when I was in HS, but they never came close enough to my to see them.  I did see Halford with his band "Fight"; they were great, but it wasn't Priest.  They did "Freewheel Burning" which was enough to give me a taste of just how great they must have been live.

Zep would of course be another band I wish I'd have been able to see.  They are almost mythical to a metalhead like me, and I certainly consider them the most important hard rock band of all time.  It must have been incredible to see and hear them at their peak.

Rachmaninov was reputed to be one of the greatest pianists of his century, with astonishingly formidable "athletic" playing ability.  To hear him play his own music must have been incredible, both for his musicianship and just the chance to understand his musical mind.  Likewise for Franz Liszt.

Bach was such a genius that it would fascinating.  I'd have loved to hear him play some of organ peices.

Here's one from left field - Loius Prima & Keeley Smith in Las Vegas in the 50's and Frank Sinatra in the same time period in Vegas.

Others would be Mozart, Bach, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs in the late 50's early 60's, Patsy Cline, Louis Armstrong in damn near any time period.

And Rob, Judas Priest put on a great live show in the early 80's. I saw them in about 1980 in a fairly small venue and they were hot. I still remember them riding a Harley on stage. Many fond memories of that venue. :)

How could I forget?   Pink Floyd in the mid 70's (wasn't born yet, or was just born) with Roger Waters fronting.

Jimi at a blues club. Had to do it!

Woah, I am in the minority here...

Bob Marley... as many times as possible
Fela Kuti... in the Shrine playing with the Egypt 80 band

Bob and Fela are perhaps the two greatest 3rd world musical superstars ever.  That means a lot, IMO.  It's not an easy thing to do when your entire country lacks resources in every area.

I saw Femi Kuti live in Irving Plaza (relative small venue in NYC).  Very good energy, very good show.  I'd like to see Bob myself.

Cool that you got to see Fela.  His son, Femi Kuti is also very very good.  He tours the US every other year or so.  Since you live in NYC, you can also go see Antibalas (www.antibalas.com).  They are a tribute band to Fela, and they play some TIGHT afrobeat music.  The energy of their live shows is incredible.

Candlemass\Atheist\Solitude Aeturnus when they came to Milwaukee in 1990, a show I only learned about some years later from a flyer. :bawl:

I have to second Carlman's comment about the unamplified gig.  My dream as well.  Unamplified gig held in a small theater and everyone in the audience shuts the hell up and doesn't make a sound until they're done playing.  Amazing how much better guitar cabs sound before some yahootie sticks an SM58 4" from the cone and runs it through the PA.  Makes me sad.  The only way this would happen is if you hired a band to play in your backyard and asked them not to bring PA.  I wonder how well that would go over?

Horowitz' return to Moscow...
Bach improvising at the organ...
Schubert playing at a salon...
The premiere of the Rite of Spring.

Sitting in at the Kind of Blue sessions...if the music is amazing in a recording this old, I can't imagine the live sound.

I would want to go back to February 1964 and be in the Ed Sullivan Theater when the Beatles first performed on Ed's program.  I am sure I probably wouldn't be able to hear a damned thing, but it would have been fun.

Robert Johnson at some juke joint in the Delta.

Charlie Christian somewhere in Oklahoma after he plugged in.

The Beatles in Hamburg where they honed their chops and became a great act.
