Budget system slams!
« on: 4 Mar 2008, 01:18 pm »
Continuing my downward spiral into budget gear, I posted a couple weeks ago about the Axiom M80V.2 speakers. I got a lot of good recommendations from a lot of people. I ended up buying the Axiom's anyway. People rave about the fit, finish and look of the Axiom's. Don't know why. They look like budget, vinyl wrap, which they are. What they do however, is give me the deepest, tightest bass I've had in my home. After a hundred hours or so, these really sound fine. Very good balance top to bottom, deep, extended bass response. I figured since the Axiom's and my Denon stereo receiver were getting along well, I'd feed the speakers a little better. In went an NAD C372. Wow! Now here's mid-fi about as good as it gets! I'm running a Technics SL1200 with KAB mods, a Dynavector 10x5, into a Project Tube Box II with NOS Mullards, into the NAD, into the big Axioms. I've had systems [quite a few, actually] that cost many multiples of this system that just couldn't come close. I just want to reassure some of the younger, less well heeled audiophiles out there that you really don't have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to have great sound in the house. A well assembled budget system can take you places just like the spendy stuff can. You just have to give up the thick aluminum faceplate and real wood finish. With R&R, this modest stereo holds it's own with most any. Can't wait to get home this evening and slap on Talking Heads first album!

A refreshingly good bit of news, as you said, younger folks take heed !

It is nice when system senergy takes place without putting one into debt.

The Axiom M80V.2 speakers sound like a great choice.
I looked for reviews on your NAD C372 and found this:
http://tinyurl.com/2f5b4z

The first review, especially, would have me casting a critical eye on your amp as an unnecessary bottleneck for longterm enjoyment. In the interest of setting and forgetting your system for a decade, I would urge you to look at alternatives for the NAD.

You see, the NAD 2200 referred to in the first review of the C372 as being so superior to the C372 was the very one I had just purchased 20 years ago. I was wondering at that time where to turn for improvement in my system - I didn't know what was not working, just that something wasn't. A salesman/friend kept insisting I take home a Mission Cyrus I or II to try over the weekend. Finally I gave in to his insistence, thinking I needed more power than the Mission showed on paper.
Even though the NAD showed twice the power on paper, the Mission could be played louder and the sound ... well, this was the first time I had any notion that the amplifier could play such an important role in the playback chain. I now felt motivated to turn my system on for the pleasure of it for the first time in years.

Now, keep in mind this was in comparison to the NAD that was named as being significantly better than the C372.
That's why I suggest that you try a few alternatives to the C372 in your system to make sure you are not throwing away potential that you have yet to hear from your Axioms.

Then you can relax for a decade and just enjoy!  :)

Hi Russell. I really wouldn't put my faith in reviews posted on Audioreview. I've owned quite a few NAD products through the years. I have always found them to be dependable, pretty well built and most of all, very musical. The C372 now has a black faceplate [yea! no more grey!] and the output power has increased to 170wpc into 8 ohms. It's a real powerhouse that mates very well with the big Axioms. I'm very happy with this system. If the NAD breaks in a week, well, that would be another story. So far, so good!
