Computer PS for Bugle - is it OK?
« on: 21 Feb 2007, 08:15 pm »
Yesterday I hooked up my Bugle pre amp and Wowww!! Staggering bass without loosing on the high notes. Sound is what I describe as robust. Never imagined I could get that type of bass from my 8W SE valve power amp driving 90dB/W/m speakers.

Can someone tell me if it's possible to use a computer power supply (the ones with a fan and several wire outlets with +/- 12 and 5 volt DC? Checking the PS specs the current rating for the positive voltages are rather high (20 and 8 amps). Does this rule them out as PS for the Bugle? Are there any special things to avoid?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

use a computer power supply

Not a good idea.  Sure it can provide power, but it will be extremely noisy.  PC supplies are switch mode and kick out a lot of HF noise.  Not only that, but with such a small load (BUGLE), it'll probably go into a standby 'chirp' mode.  It will be a mess, sonically.

For audio it is much safer to use an old school linear supply.
