head phones for apple ipod

I just orderd a 10 gp

apple

ipod mp3 player.I have 2 questions.What are some good head phones for running etc.
The ipod takes mp3 and wav whitch one should I save the music to and why. Thanks

The best headphones for mobility are the etymotics. I have the ER-6's and I use them everytime I'm working out or traveling. Pricey, but so worth it. . .

For reference I also have the Sennheiser HD280's for my office and another pair for my home PC, and the HD600's for my dedicated music/ht setup. The etymotics have the same level of detail of the 600's (more detail than the 280's), but don't have the same level of bass as the 280's or the 600's, but that's to be expected. I just turn the bass boost up a notch on my portable player and it's fine. I also had the Grado SR60's in my posession for a while before I gave them to a friend as a gift a couple of years back, and I also had the Sony MDR-V6's on loan from a friend for a couple of weeks not too long ago. For their size and the sound quality the Ety's rule. The other headphones I've tried (that are small like the Ety's) all suck at sound quality, while the other headphones that match the Ety's in sound quality are all big, bulky, and not portable at all . . .

I use etymotic ER4S when traveling. Used to have a huge portable rig with a Cosmic w/4 D cell batteries but traveling with the rig raises some eyebrows with airport security. So I just use an ipod and the ety's now. The ER4-S don't get too loud, which may or may not be a good thing (good for your long-term hearing, bad that you may not be able to get it as loud as you want to). The ER4P would be a better match for the ipod.

Another vote for the Etys.

Only caveat is that it's not for jogging/exercise. It sounds like a stethescope inside your ear if you move around too much.

If you don't mind the size (normal, smaller) and the retro look, go for Grado SR-60. They help you understand what headphones are all about.

This from a Sennheiser owner of 30 years, though being a headphone freak, you're not likely to catch me without at least two sets at any one time.

The Grados should also have a reasonable price, off hand I'd guess at around $75.

I got a 30 gigger myself, and broke the headphones that came with ipod within a week. I went ahead and bought the Sony MDR-EX71SL since it was cheaper than the other headphones mentioned, but also had some isolation (important since I work in rooms with lots of loud computers). However, sound quality is only so so, but hey its white and matches the ipod if you care about that sort of thing.

Since you're going to be jogging, I wouldn't suggest any closed ear-plug type headphones. Its rather dangerous since you wouldn't be able to hear anything from your environement. I would istead suggest a pair of headphones that is "open" like them koss ksc-50's, or ksc-35's. Now, I've never heard them, but its like 20 bucks a pair, its open, supposedly comfortable, and supposedly of good sound quality.

Dop! I guess I should learn to read more carefully. For jogging, forget the etymotics, they are way too microphonic. The cord picks up every movement noise from the cord. Get something less expensive and disposable, Koss Porta Jr, or some of the cheaper sennheisers.

I got the SR-60's as well, but found the earpads irritating; I ended up buying the pads from the better models (for $15). I just use them at home so don't know how they work while running.

I suspect the Grado 60 or 80 may be what you looking for. The Grado i80 is only about $20-30 more than the 60. You should not need a headphone amp with either.

If you're going to consider the Grado SR-80 take a look at the Alessandro Music Series 1. It's made by Grado and IMO sounds better then the SR-80. You can order it for $99 shipped from http://www.alessandro-products.com

I think the MS-1 is a real bargin in headphones but YMMV. I also use the Ety ER4S when I travel by plane. Their great for air travel or anytime you need excellent isolation. I find I don't really like the complete isolation they provide most of the time, I like to have some contact with my environment.
