Anybody here have a CRT projector?
« on: 15 Mar 2007, 06:03 am »
I recently sold my DLP PJ to my sister with the idea of upgrading to a 720 DLP, eventually going 1080P once the prices come down.  But it occurs to me that I might be able to shoehorn a CRT PJ into my system.  The better ones that cost tens of thousand$ years ago now sell for ten cents on the dollar, and are 1080P right now.  And even a DLP fanboy like me readily admits no digital PJ (that I've seen, haven't seen the new JVC, though) can match a good CRT.

Anyone here run an 8" or 9" CRT?

I do - I run an NEC XG135LC.  Great pic, excellent detail and blacks, etc.  PITA to keep set up and converged.

I've been considering CRT projectors for a while, as I still love the colors and black on my Pioneer Elite RPTV.  However, they're so huge (the 9 inch variety are almost three feet across and a foot high), that I'm considering a digital projector instead.  I think the CRTs have more brightness, though, and a better picture, but the difference probably isn't enough to go through the travails of setting up a CRT projector.

Yes, I use a ceiling mounted Runco 930 hd-capable pj since '99 (Stewart Videomatte 110 " diag) and had an under-the-coffee-table one (Mits commercial grade, don't remember model number, not HDTV) since '88.  I I've always loved the black level and film quality of crt-based pj's, but economics and the advancement of stuff like the JVC's and Sony's LCOS, means that when my green tube finally goes (it's showing some age) it will be digital for me.

How's the noise level?  I've heard the NECs are really loud.

Yup it's loud.  You need to do the fan mod and still will want a hush box if it's right overhead.

My Runco is basically a rebadged NEC and was very loud until....Chuck Williams (ISF magician) travelled over from DC in 2004 and installed his fan mod.  Ahhh, much better.

I'm thinking along the lines of a Barco 808 Graphics, Ampro 3300 or an EH 8500.  Lots of guys are down on Ampro but it's one of the lowest profile 8 inchers around, and my ceiling is barely over 7'.  The Barco or EH would probably be quieter.  I could see a hushbox someday but not in the near future.

How many of you have your CRT on the ceiling?
