Pioneer DV-563A DVD.

It plays SACD and DVD-A. It's looks good for the price, so I was wondering if anyone has heard it. If so, how is the CD playback, as well as the other formats?

I've been curious about this deck, too.  At the price (under $200) it seems worth trying out.  I have a DV-45A, but the cheaper one would be nice for my second system if the sound quality is even reasonable.

apparentyl it doesn't play DSD (SACD format) directly. It does a DSD->PCM->Analog conversion to playback SACD. Most SACD players do DSD->Analog conversion when playing back SACD discs.

I wonder how this effects sound quality.

That's one of the reasons why I decided to go with the Sony DVP-NS755V instead for a little more $$$. Besides, Sony invented SACD to begin with, so they should know how to decode their own system best.

As for any effects on sound quality, I would think there would be a little compromise in the sound because of the extra steps the signal has to go through before it's converted to analog.

It's kinda like screwing on a couple of cheap filters on a Nikon ED lens, it's just going to degrade the image quality.

I can't find the link, but I believe this model converts according to Sony specs, so SACD should be passable.  Here is the manufacturer's link.  Sounds like a winner for $179, I guess later this year they will have a HDMI unit as well for $50 more.http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pioneer/CDA/CompanyOverview/PressDetails/0,1479,92763,00.html

Forget the cheapo phillips or any under 1500.00 player and get a  Phillips 963sa for 400.00 delivered.

It has better sonics than my [1500.00]9000 es, not to mention a better picture, and if go to the high rez board on www.audioasylum.com , you can see other opinions on besting players up to 2k in cd/sacd/dvd.

Then buy the cheapest dvd-a player you can find to go along with it, if you must have dvd-a.

Ears,

That's very interesting.  Does the 963sa sound better than the 9000es for both SACD and redbook CD?  Also (more importantly for me), have you compared their performance as transports?

I have been interested in replacing my Cary 303 (now used just as a transport) for some time.  I compared it to the Pioneer 47Ai but the Cary was still better.  I do have a lot of respect for the 9000es, and if the 963 is as good or better as a transport then it may be a great replacement for both my Cary and my old Tosh dvd player.

The Sony has a lot better build quality than the 963sa, so if build quality is paramount to a good transpot, then i would say go with the 9000.

The 963 offers superior sacd playback, but it is not as big of a difference as the redbook playback, when compared to the 9000es.

Also, nobody has mentioned using the 963 as a transport in the many posts i have read before purchasing.

I am waiting for the nex't gen Sony with firewire out to hit our shores, and hoping a dsd dac to go with it, comes out in the nex't year or so.
And not the 10k dac available now.

If i get bored with the 963 sonics before then, i will do open heart with Blackgates and a superclock 2 ect before going the dac route.
