Quick trip to MO next weekend
« on: 16 Jan 2007, 03:39 am »
I posted last year about my daughter's search for a college

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=32281.0

Her second choice is Mizzou. She applied and was accepted  :D

I guess they are somewhat interested in some out of state tuition because they offer a scholarship to out of state applicants based on ACT scores.

My daughter qualified for the scholarship. The cost of attending Mizzou vs Colorado University at Boulder is not all that much different. Mizzou is supposed to have one of the best journalism schools in the country.

Anyway, we will be flying into KC next Thursday evening. We have a tour scheduled for Friday in Columbia.

Does anyone have some suggestions for a place to stay in or around KC for Thursday night? Anything we should not miss in KC? or Columbia? Are there any suggestions for a place to stay in Columbia?

We will be coming back to KC on Saturday and flying out about 7 pm. Is there anyone in KC or surrounding area that would want a visit?

Thanks.

I'm from KC.  Do you plan on staying out by the airport on Thurs?  The airport is fairly far north of the city. . .horrible city planning IMO.

All I can say is to check out some BBQ!  LC's, Arthur Bryant's, Gates (in order of my fav to least fav). . .you can't go wrong.  I love the pork at all 3 places. . .

Anyways, you should check out The Plaza.  You're daughter will definitely dig all the shopping!!!

Hiya Wayne,

The Westport area of KC is a hot spot with lots of good eats and plenty of music venues to enjoy.

There is also an ultra-fi shop in KC called Primus.

Lots of cool brands if you have some time to play.

I know you are a 'classic' rocker but KC also has the American Jazz Museum.

I worked with the curator there a few years ago trying to bring some of Norman Granz's effects to the museum after his death.

Columbia is your typical college town. They've got a Blue Note in downtown Columbia.

If you were coming over next week you could see The North Mississippi All Stars.

As for places to stay in Columbia, any one of the major chains should be fine (Holiday Inn, Marriott, etc).

Thank you guys for the info.

We ended up staying at a suite hotel close by the airport.

We went to a close by mall that had a Granite City brew-pub on site. The IPA was very good and my daughter had a GREAT buffalo burger.

Unfortunately, neither of us care for pork.

Right now, we are in Columbia. The presentation at the Mizzou School of Journalism was VERY impressive. I do believe my daughter will be attending this school in the fall.

We stopped by the Flat Branch Brewing Company after our tour. Fantastic IPA and really good, fresh caught catfish.

Checked out a local liquor store for beer. They had one six pack left of Larry Bell's Hopslam.

$14.00 a six!!

Unfortunately, it IS worth it.

Cheers!

Mizzou grad here ... and I can vouch for the Journalism department.  I wasn't a Journalism major, instead Atmospheric Science - but I was a near daily visitor to the Journalism dept for a couple years, I was the 5pm and 6pm radio Meteorologist  8)  There were also quite a few people in my department with dual majors, since they planned to do TV weather after graduation, I never heard anything but good about the Journalism Dept.

Columbia is also a fun little town.  It's clean, very low crime, and a very educated population.  Housing is cheap too, or at least it was when I was there from 93-98.  Flat Branch is a reason to live in Columbia alone!  I regularly make trips back just to get a few Growlers of whatever is on tap.

Anyway, Mizzou is a great choice for your daughter - and as a Father myself, I'm sure you're happy to hear that from someone who's been there.

My daughter is interested in journalism too, but still in 10th grade.  She's an excellent student.   :thumb:  We have a state sponsered tuition account that financially encourages us to stay in Michigan.  U of M is tougher to get into, MSU pushed foreign studies which she's interested in.  What little research I've done says to go almost "wherever" for the 4 year degree and then focus on journalism at a graduate level.  (Oh sure, more college expenses.   )  The advice seemed to center around the quality of the student newspaper.  My daughter wants to go where there is "real news" being made (that probably means either the left or right coasts).

I've got inlaws in MO and Mizzou is spoken well of by them.
