Bond movie suggestions
« on: 28 Nov 2006, 09:58 pm »
Watching "Dr. No" very good movie, will watch the last 20 minutes of it tonight.

My wife wanted to see some of the old bond movies before the new one came to DVD.

I have seen Moonraker and want her to see it, any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Paul, I split this post off the "What new movie have you picked up?" thread as it's not (yet) about a new disc you've picked up.

So, when you mean "old Bond movies" how old are you talking?

Goldeneye is really good. And I actually liked one of the Dalton ones when it first came out. Though I don't remember which one.

And I don't know the Connery & Moore ones well enough to say yes or no to any of 'em...

Despite the silliness of Bond's movies, I'm still a fan.

I liked "From Russia with Love" and "Diamonds are forever" by Sean Connery

I liked almost all the Bond movies by Roger Moore, I am not a Roger Moore fan at all, I think he's too old for the role, I used to nicknamed him "slow-motion" Bond, but I like the stories, they were more outrageous and sillier than Sean Connery's James Bond.

Hey!

I think you should see them all! :D Seriously! Especially those earlier ones with Sean Connery.

    Of Sean Connery.... I like

   1. Dr. No

   2. From Russia with Love ( The leading lady is so beautiful :D )

   3.Thunderball

But I have to admit though that I'm more of a Roger Moore fan :D Well, I guess its because I grew up watching "Bond films" in the '80s. :D

    Of Roger Moore... I like

    1. The Man with the Golden Gun ( Well, it was filmed in Thailand in the early '70s )

    2. Moonraker (Far fetch but it was fun )

    3. For Your Eyes Only

Well, however I missed some of the later one with Pierce Brosnan.... I guess I do have catching up to do. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Sean Connery was the REAL Bond (IMHO).  I liked Roger Moore in Live and Let Die, but most of his movies were just too 'campy' for my tastes.  While I like the brand new Bond movie, I thought Brosnan was a GREAT bond - sorry to see him go.

Here's my recommendations for older movies:

1.  Diamonds are Forever
2.  You Only Live Twice
3.  Live and Let Die
4.  Thunderball

I have to go with these:

Goldfinger (Sean Connery)
Thunderball (Sean Connery)
The Spy Who Loved Me (Roger Moore)
Goldeneye (Pierce Brosnan)

Like SET Man, I grew up watching Bond in the 80s, but I have to say Roger Moore is my least favorite of the three (Timothy Dalton was the absolute worst and not even worth bringing up as Bond).  I was suprised at how much I liked Pierce Brosnan, although I think the stories were less interesting to me than the early Bond films.

Phil..LOL..I totally agree with you about Tim Dalton...I have no idea why he's chosen. The guy is not handsome, no sex-appeal..I wouldn't swap my face with his..

Pierce Brosnan is the most "charming" bond. Sean Connery is a little less "charming" but he's more "manly" than Pierce. I have no qualm when I saw women falling for these two guys in the movies, because they do have that kind of sex appeal.

But I laugh my stomach out when I saw women falling for Tim Dalton, Roger Moore..these women must be blind.

How can you say that?!?!?!

Nobody (and I mean NOBODY) could wear a powder blue tux with ruffle fronted dress shirt with the same panache as Roger Moore.  And he looked damn fine in a kilt too!

I enjoyed many of the bond movies years ago, but seeing them now they mostly look kinda silly to me.  I'd vote for Connery as the best Bond, although I honestly thought Dalton was better than he gets credit for.  Brosnan was born to play Bond- it's a shame he got the role so late in his career.

The new one doesn't look very interesting but that's more due to the fact that I think the character is irrelevant in a post Cold War world.

I do not agree. The worst was George Lazenby. Good thing he only did one movie, which by the way is the worst bond movie ever.

In my view Daltn was OK, Moore and Brosnan was both great, but the best was Mr. Connery.

I have in our Media Library at work every James Bond film and have seen each one.  These are my opinions:

Sean Connery was by far the best Bond, although he should have considered dropping the role as it became more and more silly.  Goldfinger and Thunderball were his best two films.  Thunderball has the highest box office gross of any of the Bond Films (in constant dollars).

George Lazenby's film, "On her Majesty's Secret Service," had the best and saddest ending to any of the Bond films.  I didn't care for the movie though.

Roger Moore had only two "good" films, "Live and Let Die" and "For Your Eyes Only."  Moore did not like "For Your Eyes Only," because he felt that Bond was too mean in the story.  (He is older than Connery in real life).

Timothy Dalton played Bond as a perfectly icy cold-blooded killer.  I thought that his portrayal of Bond was definitely in keeping with Connery's Bond, but without any humor at all.  Connery's Bond did bludgeon a "woman" to death after all.

Pierce Brosnan's portrayal of Bond was great in Goldeneye, but went quickly downhill into the Roger Moore silly Bond after that movie.

I haven't had the time to see Casino Royale (David Niven keeps popping into my head...which is a BAD THING).  Everyone who has seen the movie commented on an unnecessarily long ending, which is the same problem with both Dalton movies.

I would recommend purchasing the new box sets if you can afford it, you get all of the Bond movies with the exception of the newest one.  It would be a good history piece as the James Bond series is the longest running English language movie series in history.  Desmond Llewelyn had the longest run as the same character, Q, in any movie series.

Good Luck,
Chris

IMO...Sean Connery was the best Bond by a landslide...with Roger Moore a distant second.
Having said that...I haven't seen Casino Royale...but do have the Blu-ray on order.

Casino Royale was interesting from a story perspective.  The Bond character evolving was a nice twist on things.  The ending was a bit long but I'd go see the next one to see where they go with him.
