Forced burn in for SB3 - how much can a HD take?
« on: 17 Feb 2007, 12:41 am »
I will be getting back my SB3 from Wayne at BOLDER. I had already had the earlier digital mods done last year, and when I got it back then I burned it in through regular music playing. But I'd like to try a forced burn in this time. The thing that concerns me is whether I'm increasing the risk of killing my music drive by running music continuously for hundreds of hours. Could I do the same by using Slimserver to play one of the Internet radio feeds that is available to it? By that I mean, is there a feed that is of high enough quality to fully exercise the SB?

I use my SB to break everything in, using heavy music off the HD.  Don't sweat it.

The quality of the burn in sugnal is unimportant, as is the case when noise is used for such a purpose.

If you worry at all, use an Internet radio station.

Zactly - that's what I do.  Just set it on a station and let it rip.  As I 'check in' along the process, I'll kick over to the riped music on the PC but then put it back on the radio for extended burn in.

I have XLO test & burn-in CD on my HD, I've used it for burn-in a lot (24/7) and never had a problem with the HD.

Thanks to all for your input. I'm thinking along the lines of bpape: internet radio with the real stuff switched in when I want to do a check of how things are coming along.
