Is this LCD screen good enough for kitchen use?

Here is the Deal.  http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202922326&adid=17070&dcaid=17070#prodInfoSec
The price looks good for a unit to put on a kitchen wall.  I am not looking for state of the art video quality -- just a decent enough one so that I don't miss a game while I cook.  I would be looking at it from various angles.  What do you think?

I have noticed that unit locally, either at Tigerdirect or a place like it, and for what you describe it should do fine - nowhere close to an Aquos unit from Sharp, in terms of sharpness etc, but for a pampered chef, it fits the bill!

I wouldn't see why not.  I re-did my kitchen over the summer and about 4 mos. back put a Vizio (a couple of people told me Vizio is made by Sony) 32 inch LCD TV I got at Costco for $115 more than that.  I had a 13 inch CRT on one of those swivel thinks on the wall before that and it stuck out a bit.  I watched a bit of the games yesterday while I ate in the kitchen and was really happy I got it.  It came with one yr. in home service and most of the time I watch the news while I'm eating.

After your post, I checked out Costco and found this.  http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11171198&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&N=4001382&Mo=16&pos=1&No=12&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=3316&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&Sp=C&ec=&topnav=
It ends up being a little more than the Buy.com offering due to tax but it's free shipping and most of all, I can return it to a local Costco warehouse for a full refund if I don't want it for whatever reason.  The Buy.com offering could not be returned to Buy.com and I would have to pay shipping both ways to the manufacturer for repair or exchange only.

It has QAM input too, which means that if you have cable, you should be able to receive high def local channels.

I will have to check Verizon Fios TV.  The junction box is just on the other side of the wall -- I should be able to run aa cable outlet to the kitchen wall with out much trouble.  But doesn't ATSC tuner get local channels in HD over the air?

I believe what happens is that over-the-air (i.e., received by antenna) high def signals are 8VSB.  Cable companies convert this to QAM.  See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television_in_the_United_States#Satellite_and_Cable

(I assume the conversion is because 256 QAM can contain a lot of data.)

Supposedly, cable companies are not allowed to scramble local channels.

I got my sturdy wall mount at Costco too.  It was $85.

I forgot to order one at Costco so I shopped the net and got a tilting 100x200 wall mounting for $42 shipped. :D

Good shopping.  Mine is likely slightly on the overkill side and can handle a bigger display.  I tend to go on the overkill side when it comes to audio stuff anyway.  It was the last thing I put in and after almost 4 mos. from start to finish on the kitchen (from ripping up the old to laying the tile) and I had been watching prices towards the latter part of last summer on LCDs and when I walked into Costco and saw the $100 price drop on the TV I decided to bite the bullet and finish up the job.

Darn it.  I guess I paid too much.  Actually, I ordered mine from Pinpoint Marketing and with shipping it's only $1.50 more.  I have no complaints as I already received it yesterday after ordering it Monday.  The LCD unit from Costco just arrived as well.  I like it when plans come together.   :)

The Sceptre unit was not very good at picking up signal over the air but it works great with cable hook up.  Actually, it's Verizon Fios for me but it should work the same with cable or dish.  The built in ATSC/QAM tuner works flawlessly recognizing free channels of which there are many.  The video is also excellent especially in HD.  Now, I don't mind spending time in the kitchen at all for the up coming Super Bowl thing.  This has my wife's blessing.  It also doesn't cost me anything in subscription since I am not adding a set top box. I get a new HDTV and wife likes it.
