WD 500gb Caviar HD @ Tiger Direct for $150

These are SilentPCReview's current favorite quiet, big drives. These are bare drives with the full 3 year warranty, so I don't think they are refurbs, and there is no mention at Tiger that they are. You'll need a SATA cable (~$7).

If you use an older PC, you might need a SATA PCI controller card (item # M501-1086 @$20), which can control 2 SATA drives. Tiger has a SATA cable/SATA->PATA/IDE power adapter, which is needed to connect a SATA drive to power supplies designed for IDE/PATA drives (item # C250-2138 @$7).

Since I'm putting 2 in my case, I also needed a 5.25" to 3.5" mounting kit to fit this 3.5" drive into a 5.25" bay (item #C250-2007). I also bought a 120mm case fan to replace my current 80mm fan, since I'll be generating more heat with the 2 drives. I plan to mirror the 2 drives, so I don't have to re-rip and re-tag 1200 CDs in case of a crash. I bought a bag of PC screws for $4 (item #ULT31338), to make sure everything assembles. Total cost was $380 delivered for 1TB of storage.

They're best current gb/$ deal was a 320gb drive for $80. I don't remember the brand, or if was SATA or PATA/IDE. I went with the 500gb, because I think my collection might fit on one drive.

This should complete my PC music set-up. I recently bought a Squeezebox 3, which I am going to swap for the Transporter before my eval time is over, or use the SB3 with a Benchmark DAC1 if the TP doesen't float my boat (I hope it does). I also just got the EMU 1212 sound card from Musician's Friend for $99, for the office system which also serves as the music server for the SlimDevices toys.

Now to rip 1200 or so CDs... See ya in 3 years

500GB for $150.  Now that's inexpensive!  Half a terabyte.

If you have a Sata controller then all you need to do is format it in MAC.  or put it in an external enclosure and connect it via USB.

The later one is the best solution.

The price is definitely coming down.  This is not caviar but it's plug and play.

Its $153 shipped free through Dell Small Business ( http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=A0649833&ACD=qIZ6RcpIAhdAAkm8tZRs&AID=0038386869 ). Then you can call OD and price match Dell and then use a $50 rebate to get it for $119 total, or you can pricematch Staples and use a $15 coupon and get it for $130.

The prices are dropping.

Newegg has a 500g external USB for $169 at the moment. One of the reviews posted said his has a WD SATA disk inside. Disk space sure is getting cheap. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822173047
