FMOD Line Level Crossovers for Home?
« on: 11 Jul 2003, 07:47 am »
Hi,  On page 285 of Parts Express's latest catalog, there are line level crossovers for car audio.  Of course it says they are "better than a much more expensive electronic crossover".  They look like an extended RCA plug, 24kt gold and various Xfrequencies available. They can be piggy-backed to create other options.  You plug your RCA from the pre-amp into it, and it plugs directly into your amp.

Anyone have experience with these?  More importantly, can they be used for home audio?  Or is there a home audiophile version?

I'm not an expert on car stuff, but I think they muddy the sound and create too much heat. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.  But I don't think they're very efficient.

I haven't seen the catalog, but Vandersteen uses these for their subs.  The Vandersteens are a passive unit that plugs directly into your amp.  It filters out the low frequencies so your amp never even sees them and the x-over is matched to the input impedence of your amp.

There are ones made for home audio as well.  ACI makes these.  I tried a pair and didn't care for them.  I don't think first order is steep enough.
