Bryston 4 b sst clipping issue
« on: 5 Jan 2007, 10:47 pm »
I am new with Bryston gears. For the past 20 some years, most of my amp were mid-fi from Rotel, B &K, Parasound and Adcom. I did owned Sunfire and CJ MF2250 for a short period . I ordered the Bryston 4 B sst to mate with my new AR SP 16L pre. after a session listenning with Paradigm ref 40v3 and Cary 303/300 CDP. I love the clean bass and the smooth mid even the high still a little " extend". My biggest concern is there are a few threads over Audiongon complaint abt the 4 B sst cannot handle below 4 ohm load. I am looking to get the Maggies and I am really worried about the fact that Bryston is not a stable amp for less than 4 ohm load. If the 4 B SST amp clips at listenning level of 80 db using 6 ohm/86db impedance speakers, to me it is not a very good built amp. I am ok with the " bright" high frequency but unstability even below 4 ohm is not acceptable. Why there are so many people buying Bryston ? Is it because Bryston is " poor man Krell, rich man Adcom" ?  4 B SST owners out there, please shed some lights. Thank you

You've been misinformed. A 4BSST will easily handle Magnepans & most anything out there. In fact, a 3BSST would be more than sufficient for most (I never got mine to clip). The 'high a little extend' noted is from the Paradigms - not the 4B.

The Bryston will drive Maggies very well. Better than many other amps.

I have been using a Bryston 4B SST to power my VMPS RM40 speakers (3.5 ohm minimum impedance, 4 ohm nominal 90 dB/1w/1m efficiency).  In a nearfield environment (10 feet) I have never had problems with the amplifier clipping.  The local VMPS dealer in MA uses the identical amp to drive a pair of VMPS RM/X in a large listening room (16' x 20' with 10' ceilings) and to my knowledge he has never had clipping issues.

Best,

John

Thank you gentleman, I feel a bit better now. I am looking forwards for my 4 BSST arrival. Hopefully, I will be happy to keep it in my system for a long time. Best regards.
