I'm going to go and listen to Sting's "The Soul Cages" now, and see what happens.  Haven't heard this in years, and will be interesting to hear what it sounds like now I have a decent system.

For Q-Sound to work, you "MUST" be equidistance between the two speakers.

Oh.  Maybe that's why I didn't really notice much while listening and cleaning the kitchen!

I wonder how one of those discs would work through Polk's SDA speakers? Omega-mecha-soundstage?

I'm with DB Cooper with the Madonna slam.

As far as "Q" recordings on Polk SDA-SRS speakers, I had a pair of 2.3's and the very same and mentioned Rodger Waters "amused to death" CD. I remember the "Q" sound effect being somewhat weird through the Polks as they already had the left/right cancellation technology working for them. The album actually sounded better on normal speakers.

Thanks for the info, Wayner...that is what I would have guessed, as well. I recall some people trying the Carver Sonic Hologram preamp with SDA's and saying essentially the same thing...too 'weird'.

I agree. I had a several pair of Polk SDA speakers and the Q-Sound Madonna CD did come across a bit wierd when the SDA cable was used on the speakers. I preferred these speakers running in a conventional manner anyway.

You will also get more of the "effect" if your speakers are set up with little to no toe-in. At least this is what I have noticed in most of my systems.

The main section of showroom is about 45 feet long and 20 feet wide. You should hear the "spaciousness" when the system is set along the long wall.

Agreed, longtime SDA owner, Qsound and SDA doesn't mix well.

There's a recording technology/technique known as "Q-Sound" that creates surround-sound effects using only 2-channel stereo.  Apparently, it is widely used in some of today's video games, but it has also been used in the mastering process of a number of music recordings.

See here for more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-Sound

I'm looking for more recordings that use Q-Sound.  The Wikipedia page lists the following:

The Adventures of MC Skat Kat and the Stray Mob by MC Skat Kat (1991)
Amused to Death by Roger Waters (1992)
Broken China by Richard Wright (1996)
The Immaculate Collection by Madonna (1990)
Pulse by Pink Floyd (1995)
The Soul Cages by Sting (1991)
Spellbound by Paula Abdul (1991)

In addition, I know that Mino Cinelu's debut CD also uses it (great CD, btw!), and one of the first two CDs by Extreme also uses it (although I don't know which CD by them it is).

Anyone know of others?

Ahhh this would explain why I like to listen to that Paula Adbul Spellbound CD.  For years I would stumnle across it and say "Why in the hell do I have a Paula Abdul CD" and then I would listen to it and enjoy it and put it away and come back to it in a few months and go through the whole process all over again.

Sure do enjoy that Q sound technique, great for getting a WOW out of my friends.  I have Madonna and Roger but will get the others mentioned in this thread.

One of the most dramatic uses of Q-Sound is on Extreme's "III Sides to Every Story".  The opening track uses Q-Sound to simulate a WWII battlefield...pretty cool stuff!

I've also found that some Israeli techno CDs have heavy use of Q-Sound-like effects...check out Fatali and Infected Mushroom...

Does Q Sound need to update their website because I don't see Extreme mentioned as using their technology.  Is there a more comprehensive list?
