PC as front-end for Olive FAQ?
« on: 17 Dec 2006, 06:36 pm »
I realize this is a general Olive question, not specific to RWA at all, but since there is a lot of Olive expertise here, hopefully Vinnie won't mind.

I would love to use my MacBook to control my new RW-modded Musica.  I setup the unit to join my wireless LAN and it looks like it worked - I found and selected my network on the unit and it has an IP address.  But, I don't see the Olive from any of my networked machines.

Two questions:

1) Is it even possible to use a PC to control what the Olive plays?  I know, from the manual, that I can play, via ITunes, anything from the Musica on the laptop, but that's not what I want - I want to play music on the Olive from the laptop, since I can't see the Olive screen from my chair.  Or, do I need to buy Olive's remote device for this?

2) Do I need to do something else to get it on the network?  (My wirelesss network uses no WEP password - it's totally open.)

Thanks.

Hi Paul,

YES, with software update VER 2.3 and beyond, you can use your computer to control your Olive.  You connect your Olive to your wireless network (or via Ethernet cable) and then type the IP address of your Olive into your web browser.  For example, http://196.126.1.101

You should then get the Olive web interface screen (named "Rondo"), and you can pretty much do everything from your computer that you can do from the Olive unit.  You can also use a wireless PDA.  I am using a Nokia 770: http://www.olive.us/p_bin/?cid=control

Hope this helps,

Vinnie

NOTE: The Olive User's Manual is not up to date, so many of the new features from the latest software updates are not listed.  Olive needs to release an updated manual :whip:

Thanks, Vinnie.  Yeah, the manual seems to be much out of date.

I don't think my Olive software is, either.  I'll have to take care of that tonight.

Thanks again.

Since you have one, how about giving your PDA a try and letting us know!

I believe most PDAs have too small a screen.  Browser compatibility may also be an issue.  The Imate is one of the bigger screens out there, so it may work.  Olive now explicitly support several alternatives to the Nokia, but they don't list the Imate.
