Clarinet output control question.
« on: 27 Jan 2007, 05:11 am »
Hello!  I recently built a Clarinet and also a DIY ST-35 amp to make my system all vacuum tube.  I also have a Cornet 2.  After rolling lots of tubes, I wish I could turn the bass down just a tad on the main outputs going to my towers.  My sub has controls on the back for adjustment on the 2nd pair of outputs.  Is there an easy way to do this on the Clarinet?  Could you cut off the frequencies under 180hz on the 1st pair of outputs?  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.  Peace.  Robert

Robert, I am using the second set of outputs on my Clarinet to feed a Paradigm Servo-15 sub-woofer.  I also have a Paradigm x-over unit.  I run 2 RCA's from the Clarinet to the X-over, then there is a single RCA output from there to the sub-woofer.  I have all the "control" I need.  I am not sure why you can not do the same or maybe you just don't have the wiring flexibility I do.  Maybe I missed something.  It is interesting you are experiencing more bass with the Cornet2 and Clarinet.  That's exactly what I have and my experience is similar.

On the CLARINET, the dual outputs are strapped together.  Changing the frequency response will affect both.  Only thing I can think of is to lower the value of the input coupling cap on the ST35.  That is, if it has one.

The 180Hz xover point seems a bit high to me.  Unless the bass on the main towers ain't no good.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!  I will check out playing with the input caps.  Peace.  Robert
