Ported version of AV3s for lower extension?

Danny,

I'm curious as to if you have a design for a ported AV3 (not floorstanding) to get a lower bass extension from it.  I guess this would be an 8-ohm AV2.  I am kicking around some ideas for a new front soundstage and I love my AV1's and thought I would pull in even more performance.  I don't really want a floorstanding speaker but I do want good extension.  The AV2 would be perfect if it was 8ohm... as my receiver will not handle the 4 ohm load.

So my question is... Do you have a box plan for a ported/smaller box AV3 (8-ohm) that can sit on stands or a bookshelf?

I haven't drawn one up but it would be pretty easy. Just take the A/V-3S box and double its depth and add a pair of the appropriate length ports.

I just finished installing my setup with AV3 main, AV3s center and AV1rs rear.  I'm not ready to write a review yet and I'm not too good at it either but what I can tell you for sure, think about it twice before building ported AV3s, those transmission lines in the AV3 are incredible.  The bass is exactly what I was looking for, no need for a sub with music.  Before deciding on building the AV3 I was about to buy the Meadowlark Kestrel2 which are also a transmission line speaker.  I don't know what it is, maybe I'm a bit biased or maybe Danny would have a real explanation for it but there is something about the bass from a transmission line that I find different in ported speakers.  Bass seem crisper and kind of more defined if that means anything.  Anyway, I don't help with your question but I thought I'd mention it since you don't seem to have taken your decision yet on a ported version...  Cheers.

I have the AV/3's as well. They really do work well. The OB 5 I have is a ported design. There is a difference. I still really like the AV/3's bass very much. They work real well.

Ditto here for the A/V-3's overall sound, including fine bass.  I gave them to my daughter as a wedding gift (she asked me to build her a pair, but I didn't have time) and built an A/V-3S for the center channel - yes, make it bigger and add two ports and you're in business.
