Mikey Fremer on "Geared Up"
« on: 16 Dec 2006, 03:29 am »
While watching a show called "geared up" on INHD they had Michael Fremer on there pushing vinyl, Pretty funny to see mikey explaining some of the stuff to the host who looked a little uh.. Lost.... Sure vinly sales might be going up I dont think it will ever come back into the mainstream. Most people laugh when I tell them that I have a record player, They are even more shocked when they find out you can get new releases on Vinyl. MP3 might be super easy but I like cd's the most out of all the formats, Vinly is cool but lets face it, Its a pain vs all others. Cmon mikey not all of us have such a good analog setup, it wont come back into the mainstream!

Anyway, Just thought it was cool to see at least something intersting on one of these HD shows  :thumb:

That is odd to see High End anything on TV.  I gave up my vinyl in 89 finally. Never missed it too much as I had been obsessive about cleaning my records and getting little clicks and pops over time anyway. These days cd recordings have come a long way as well as the dacs. I'm content and get excellent reproduction with cds.

Very cool - I dig Mikey and his writing style (wish I could afford his turntable but, I am one of the few who doesn't hold against him). :D

Vinyl is back. Many audiophile catalogs have pages and pages of new turntables and only 1 or 2 pages of CD players. CD sales are also hitting a new low with all of the theft from downloading.

Well I must say that was disappointing. Another ill served attempt to stear people towards better sound.  They didn't even really show the turntable etc...  The MP3 player segment at the top of the show was much more informative.  They showed the players, went through some features etc...  How can you push vinyl and not even show the turntable.  Many young people watching would have benefited from seeing a range of nice affordable cool looking TT's etc...

I just thought it was a waste, the masses don't know who Fremer is and to just have him talking a format was useless.  I watched another episode and again they showed and talked up flat screens, it was much more alluring.  There is a big reason why analog has the perception it does, poor marketing.  You have a handful of philes with big dollar or well crafted analog setups who say it's better but very little else to pull a consumer to the format.

On top of that Fremer pulls out an MP3 player from his sportscoat, lushing over how the vinyl ripped file sounded so good...still taking one back to the MP3 player, yeah that helped.

Another wasted opportunity.
Please next time bring some young person from some other magazine and have them demo vinyl.

The problem I think is that most people dont have a good experience with vinyl. Personally I was shocked when i first got a record player and bought some new records to play on the thing because i was amazed at how you could create such good sound from such a simple device. I mean you can turn the thing with your hand and have sound!

I actually just setup my TT into my system permanently after watching this segment just because there are a couple records (that are new i might add) that i really like. But i also have some used vinyl and it pretty much is just a crappy experience compared to the same album on cd, sacd, new vinyl or even mp3 because of all the noise. someone who is just discovering vinyl from their parents attic like mikey suggested is going to turn the thing on, figure out how crappy it sounds and say, ta'hell with this! Even though I have a pretty decent TT as far as something that doesnt cost a fortune and, well a sort of cheap cartridge (sansui SR838 with Grado black) And I have even tried to the best of my ability to set it up well with all the scales and protractors it still doesnt come reasonably close to rivaling my cd player.

Its popular for sure, And it even has a lure for someone like me who doesnt get the greatest sound out of the thing just because its cool. But its like Tubes, Very popular among audiophiles but not something your going to start seeing pop up in a walmart near you. BTW i was sort of dissapointed too that the most they showed of the TT they had on the table there was a mere glimpse. :(

I've enjoyed Fremer's writing over the years, but more on HDTV than vinyl.  I agree that doesn't seem likely to make the LP more popular among the masses.  No matter how he flogs that horse it's still dead.
