Budget Amplifier Stands
« on: 3 Jan 2007, 07:24 pm »
I have a pair of monoblocks on order, and i'm looking for a pair of budget amplifier stands ... basically butcher blocks (~15"x20" and abt 2" thick). I looked around some stores that sell kitchen stuff, but found butcher blocks that were much smaller. Anyone know where i can find a pair of such blocks? Nothing exotic please.

Thanks!

Christof

I've used John Boos butcher blocks with good results.  Got mine here:

I use the Boo's blocks as well. You should be able to find them at a restaurant supply store.

I got my butcher block from Costco. It may be a seasonal item but it cost about $35Cad.
I think the dimensions are like 19x19x1.5

Cool! This is the price range that i'm looking for.
John Boos are wonderful, but having plunked a ton of money on a pair of amp/pre, i'm trying cut corners
wherever i can.

I didn't see anything like that at Costco on line.  It may be a local thing.  There is a 20" x 15" x 1.75" on line for $27.74. http://www.ablekitchen.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=LW-WCB1520&click=1784

There are some good deals online for butcher blocks, but the shipping is the deal breaker.
I went to ikea today and saw a nice 14"x20" birch butcher blocks for $25. They are not as
good looking as john boos, but they should do fine. :icon_lol:

Thanks!

Well dang, Bed Bath and Beyond is selling John Boos now, the 20x15x2-1/4 is $80.00.  Visit the store for no shipping and 20% off coupons are plentiful... http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=108436&RN=108

No way.  Get these http://www.partypalooza.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PFSFK&Product_Code=GlowHiBounce6  and cut them in half.  You can write up a glowing report on how good they work and look.

Seriously, superballs work on hard floor.  :icon_surprised:

John Boos butcher blocks would work, look here:

AT these prices, yo could buy more than one per side and laminate them together for desired thickness.

I have used concrete stepping stones available from Home Depot, etc with great results.  They are heavy and isolate the amp from vibrations and the vacuum cleaner!

I built an amp stand from 3/4" MDF.  It cost me ~$40 in materials (MDF, oak veneer for the sides, gloss black spray paint for the top).  I glued up the MDF board to get the desired 1.5" thickness, but for the price I can not complain.

Best,

John

I've got two recommendations for you.  If you want to head the maple butcher-block route, you owe it to yourself to check out Tony's Woodshop:

http://www.tonyswoodshop.com/

He will make you anything you want at a VERY reasonable price.  He made me 4 Mapleshade Samson-sized shelves for ~$220 shipped.  The results are impressive to say the least!

Another way to go, that I've had success with, is with the top of an Ikea Lack table.  I bought a black Lack table for $9.99 and installed 4 brass footers where the tables legs typically go.  Works and looks great!

I wasn't too thrilled with the way the ikea butcher blocks looked, so i'm on my way of doing pretty much what you suggested.
I bought 3/4" MDF from HD, and got them cut into 16"x20" pieces.... I'll be joining them together, and will do one of the below

- veneer them with the extra bubinga that i've bought for my OB5
- Spray paint
- Stick vinyl tiles

Thanks all for your suggestions!  :notworthy:

I've looked into using the Boos blocks as amp stands, but I'm wondering if anyone has had luck staining them deep black for WAF?  I'll do more searching, but I assume you are also installing spikes to these blocks.

Thanks,
