I have owned my Squeezebox 3 for quite sometime and love it. Unfortunately, my laptop just died and I had to replace it with a new machine. I purchased a 17" HP Laptop with Vista on it. So far everything works great. I downloaded SlimServer 6.5.2 and it worked right away last night but tonight I booted my machine up and it will not work at all. Slim Server will not even open at this point.

I called Logitech/Slim Devices and they sent me instructions which I have now done and it still does not work. I know some folks have posted and are using Vista with the SlimServer software. If you know of any fixes, tricks, or hints, please post them. I truly appreciate it. Please help.

Respectfully,

Chris

Does Vista itself seem to work normally?

Any error messages/dialog boxes popping up?

It may be some kind of security issue where Vista is locking down on the connection to the device...

Thank you for your reply. The Machine itself is working great and worked perfectly last night after my initial installation. Tonight when I went to open it and Error Message pops up "Cannot write to:" Once I close it Slim Server now opens but does not recognize the Player.

SlimServer not recognizing the Player may be a SlimServer issue or it may be that Vista security is preventing SlimServer from seeing the Player?

I also don't have Vista so I should probably let someone else help at this point  :D

The "cannot write to" error is likely Vista protecting the installation directory. Slimserver does a lot of file writing while it's running and you will need to allow it permissions to write in it's directory tree. This is a feature of Vista to try and prevent unauthorized programs from running but may programs write and update their own files while running. This applies to anything living under the Program Files directory.

You might try re-installing slim server in a new directory off the root. Maybe create a new parent for programs like this, perhaps c:\myprograms or something like that and install slim under that. Note I don't (and likely won't) have a computer running Vista but when I did I ran into the same trouble with file writes. Since I don't have a PC running Vista I don't know if this will work but in theory it should.

This link has quite a lot of info on this: http://www.neosoftware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=11183532 - it's geared toward developers but has some good information.

good luck!

Thank you Mike for the link and good information. I am looking into this today. I have engaged Slimdevices Tech support at this point and am working. It amazes me that it worked on initial install and then on reboot will not.

If anyone else has any ideas or information, please post it. I will go through withdraw without my Computer Music Collection..

Respectfully,

Chris

There is a sticky thread on Slimdevices General Discussion forum where I helped find this workaround: Install SlimServer 6.5.2 the regular way (don't install 6.5.1); On Start Search, type services.msc; go to both SlimServerMySQL and SlimServer services and make sure they are set to "Automatic"; restart them if they are stopped. I have SlimTray unchecked, but the workaround also works checking "Automatically run at login".

Thank You Val.. That is essentially what the guys at Logitech sent me... I am going to try it shortly. Wish I brought my new machine into work with me today...

Thank you again to everyone who has responded.. Again if there is anything else I may be missing, please post it..

Mike,

The Directory was the trick. I made my own and installed it and things seem to be working without the error. I am re-loading my music now and will see what happens when I go home. Thank you so much!

You're welcome and I'm glad that did the trick. Sounds like I need to update my SB firmware utility to be Vista compliant as it most certainly writes to the area of the registry that is now protected. Ah well, I wanted to convert it to the newer framework anyway. :)
