I have been thinking about getting a budget tube-amp to play with, and ran across these. Epiphone VS juniors, 5-watt El84, for $99 each. Anybody have comments about converting these for home audio use. There seems to be a lot modding going on with these, but primarily for guitar use.  These amps would be used with my B200's OB's. Any help or ideas welcome, thanks

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VSJunior/ - these?

I use an old one of the Magnavox EL84 single ended Class A console pulls, works wonders with the b200 on open baffle, more bass then they "should" have when run full range, and when run through my sub amp, thus trimming 80Hz and below, they are nice too.

I usually see several on eBay weekly...

Hi, if you are interested in building an amp, you might want to look at something like this:

http://www.tubeaudio.com/page23.html

With a higher budget, you might want to look at the ST-35 from diytube.com. They don't have a product page, really, but here is their forum:

You can get board kits here:

Transformers and chassis here:

This guy here has built a couple of versions of the amp:

Guitar amps output transformers might be the limiting factor
in the design. I think it could be an interesting way to screw
around. Chasis, power supply, transformers and an open baffle
single driver  all in one. May not "wipe the floor" of amps costing
X amount more or sound just like a 300b on steroids but at worst
you will have a dedicated amp for play back of solo guitar pieces .

i converted a pair of akai (also mfr'd under the 'roberts" name) m8 tape deck amps for stereo use, & the sound is really quite amazing.  ~5wpc of 6bq5 single-ended power, for $80, which included shipping, a m8 service manual, & the plugs/wiring to connect normal speaker cabling to the 1/4" fone plugs.

this amp looks like a good deal on agon - $250:

now for shameless spam, i have a pair of asl wave-8's, w/upgraded auricaps & holco resistors & nos svetlana tubes that i will let go for $325 shipped, or a completely refurb'd, upgraded electrohome amp w/6aq5 power tubes, also asking $325 shipped...

Yes, having played with my Maggie EL84, I am quite satisfied, especially for the $140 I have in it!

I think for the $280 you are thinking of spending, you should be able to find a used SE EL84 amp around, no?

I have not heard PP on the b200, but I can tell you that my SE amp is here to stay, for the mids and highs for sure.
