Sub Calabration
« on: 14 Nov 2006, 03:47 pm »
Hello all I have upgraded my sub to a  SVS SB12 Plus and I am trying to calibrate into my system
I own a denon 3805 avr and paradigm studio 40 speakers
I am using the AVIA DVD and when I use the low sweep & the spl I am getting major bounce on the spl spikes and dips
HOW Do I fix this should it all be close to 75DB sweep from 200 Hz to 20 Hz
Thanks

The general order of fixing sub frequency response problems is:

1. Sub placement (various techniques)
2. Phase adjustment (usually pretty simple)
           See http://www.bradjudy.com/audioblog/2005/08/30/the-a-difference-a-phase-makes/
3. Room treatment (lots of options - Realtraps and GIK are posters here)
4. EQ (like SMS-1 or R-DES)

How far you take it is up to you, but the first two are free and just require a bit of time.

It's common and frustrating for the SPL meter to fluctuate quite a bit. You try to adjust for the midpoint of the needle swing.

My understanding is that the THX standard uses 85dB as the calibration level. I used hearing protection and had everyone out of the room when I did mine.

I've never used the Avia DVD for audio setup. I used the CD that came with my M&K sub and bass management controller. It was a fairly simple process. You can download the test tones here:

http://www.mkprofessional.com/wav/index.htm

Use the HF tone to set the level of the left and right speakers first. Then use the LF tone to set the level of the sub to match the main speakers.

Good luck,
Bob

Well after playing with it for a while
the eq looks like this with the avia DVD /low feq sweep
a bump at about 150-140 Hz
a dip about 114 -90 Hz
boost about 80Hz
a dip at 70Hz
The SVS SB12+ has a PEQ But could not find a nice flat feq
