KEF 105.2 for 275$.. Get them????
« on: 16 Oct 2006, 01:31 am »
they are in very good condition with one speaker a little sun faded along a corner.
Are there other options to equal this on ebay or Audiogon or should I get these.
the clincher is that i have very little extra money and have to stick with bargins!

Man I haven't seen (or heard) those in a long time! The 105.2 is a nice speaker that probably will still hold its' own with many speakers on the current market. If I remember correctly they are fairly power hungry and you'll need a higher-powered solid state amp to properly drive them. At that price it's a no-brainer but I would check to see if the mid and woofer surrounds are rubber (which I think they are). I bought my first set of high-end speakers after hearing these. I couldn't afford them being in college at the time so I purchased the KEF 101's and a M&K Volkswoofer (powered sub).

If the rubber surrounds are ok, I'd think this is a steal for these.  It used the B300 woofers, B110 mids, and T52 tweeters, all classics.  Back in the day, I cut my teeth building transmission line enclosures with KEF B139's, B110's, and the earlier T27 tweeters.  The 105's have very nice 3 box enclosures, but as Rick said, they really take serious power to drive them well.  There is lots of info out there on the crossovers, maybe even alternative replacement drivers if you need to fix them or want to tinker a bit.

I'd take them for that. If I remember correctly they are very inefficient. They also sound damn good for that kind of money. Be sure none of the drivers are damaged as replacing them may be impossible.

With these speakers you'll also have a relatively inexpensive upgrade path, specifically, having the crossovers rebuilt with upgraded parts.  A friend of mine did this with his KEF 105's, to very good effect.

That's a good price for those, I usually see them go for 4 to 5 hundred. A lot of them are losing their tweeters apparently due to their age but I hear replacements are available.
