Best Omega speaker for this room?
« on: 8 Oct 2006, 04:11 pm »
I am planning to order a pair of Omega speakers and I am seeking recommendations based on the size and shape of the room:

I'm wondering if this room is large enough for the Super 3 XRS.

thanks

Where in that room will you put the speakers? Is this a dedicated listening room? What amp will you use?

If you need to place the speakers close to a wall, you might consider the Super Aperiodic. This is the Aperiodic 8 (Visaton B200 driver) in the Superhemp cabinet. The aperiodic port eliminates the problem of having a rear ported speaker too close to the back wall, if I understand the principle correctly.

Of course the Red Wine Audio amps will sound terrific, but matching to other amps may also be a consideration for you.

I was planning to put the speakers on the side with the 3'-6'' wide window, but I could also put them on the 12' wall. The floor is hardwood and the walls are wood panels (it's an old Victorian house). This is not a dedicated listening room but rather a living room that I am using mostly for listening. I am planning to use a Tripath based amplifier; the Red Wine is not in my budget yet, I was thinking more of one of those 41hz or other audiophile grade amps based on the Tripath chip. The source is a Squeezebox 3.

I do not see these Super Aperiodic on the Omega Speaker Systems web site anymore, are they still in production? Since this is not a large room, having speakers that do not need a lot of space between them and the walls would certainly help.

Any more comments?

thanks

Hey dudes.
The Revolutions (A8s) are still listed in the "news" section.
Hasta luego!

Dudes,

I just bought a pair of Super A8s about six weeks ago. They are beautifully made, and the sound within the first 10 hours of use was really promising. The drivers were defective, so they are back with Louis getting replacements, but I would certainly recommend them for your purposes (placing a speaker near a wall in a multi-use room).

The Omega website is out of sync with all of Louis' current offerings, but the Superhemp page gives you an idea of what the Super A8 looks like (with the B200 driver instead of the hempcone). The Revolutions and the Max Hemp are also highly regarded, but I believe that they are open-ported in the rear and so would want to be at least two feet out from the wall to prevent bass boom and really provide the tone and imaging that they are designed for.

I use a Red Wine dual-mono custom Clari-T, and I suspect that any of the Omega speakers would be a good compliment to other Tripath amps.

Someone in another post mentioned these inexpensive components from Hong Kong that might be worth a look: http://www.buyoyo.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?style=1&prrfnbr=8267002&prmenbr=152&CGRY_NUM=251&LANGUAGE=1&curr=USD

Also, I'm using a set of anti-cables, and they sound great (and the price is right): anticables.com

Best of luck.  :)

Hi dudesinmexico,

Thanks for the diagram and no worry at all about the room size. I have a 22 by 26 at the shop with 15 foot ceiling and I haven't had any problems .  The easiest is to use the 12 foot wall and charlesd is right on with the placements of the aperiodic and the ported cabinets. The super A8s are available and they have the B200. I have extensive website work to do and I have a pro working on it.

Hi charlesd,

The speakers are all set and they are getting picked up in the morning. Sorry about the delay.

Thanks again,
Louis
