Music library software-any reccomendations?
« on: 22 Sep 2006, 10:29 pm »
I've been thinking of cataloging my music collection.  It's in a number of formats, mostly CDs with a sizeable number of records too.  I'd like it to be as simple to use as possible (auto input as much as possible too) but would also like to be able to set up an extras category or two.  For example, I have a pretty good collection of recorded concerts-some as audio discs, some in FLAC format, some SHN, with the FLAC and SHN being burned to CDRs.

Any reccomendations?

I use Music Collector by collectorz.com.

It works pretty well, allows for auto input by scanning cd's.

Not perfect, but so far the best I've found.

Is it true that all CDs contain the track information (metadata) that you would get from Gracenote or cddb?

How is this info accessed?

The CDDB (and freedb) uses a computed value that is a combination of the track times and the number of tracks based on the table of contents, so there is nothing special stored on the CD. If you want the hardcore info it can be found: here.

Most of the time this produces a unique disc ID but not always. I've tried to submit a disc and it said sorry, it alraedy exists but a search won't turn it up.
