Gain Adjustment

I love my Ultra SL preamp and Ultra 550 power amp.  What an outstanding combination!  The sound quality is superb, but there is one thing I am struggling with.  Can the ~20dB of gain from the preamp be reduced through adding resistors?  I think I read this somewhere in the archives.  Is this something that you can do, Frank, if I send my preamp back to you?  Is there any detrimental effect on sound quality caused by the addition of resistors to reduce preamp gain?  Currently, my normal listening volume corresponds to low volume knob settings (~9:00 or even lower).  I'd like to be able to raise it to around 11-12:00 for the same apparent volume.  I think it would be easier to use the remote control with the gain set lower.  Thanks!

A 1000 ohm resistor connected from each line output to the back panel ground lug nearby will reduce the gain by about 6 dB and give you more useful volume control rotation.  You can do this yourself if you are good with a solder pencil.

Call me for details.  651-330-9871.

How cool is that to be able to talk to the engineer/designer/builder/manufacturer and bingo, get a responce and your problem is solved. I love American made stuff! :thumb:

I can say that I will own as much AVA stuff for my system for the rest of my life because of this wonderful service! and sound!:D
