Best message board pointer I ever got was "check out Patricia Barber if you like Diana Krall's lounge music ".   It was more and better of what was appealing to me in Diana's music.   Great call Tyson.

In a similar vein - I love The Commitments, so what should I check out for "more of what they do - only better"?   It's got to have some earthy chick singers taking an occasional turn at the mike for one thing....

Check out "Standing in the Shadows of Motown"

Both the DVD and the soundtrack album

These were the original players that made all the hits for Motown.

They are put together with some good vocal talent.

The Holmes Brothers-combination gospel and barband soul.  Catch them live if you can (they are based in NYC), they are an awesome act.  Their CDs tend to be a little too much gospel for me, though.

The Commitments movie soundtrack is great.

Buddy Guy-Damn Right I've Got The Blues (the album with an even better Mustang Sally)-is very good and very similar.  All star supporting cast, like Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, etc.

If you want the real thing, pick up Roy Buchanan's anthology "Sweet Dreams."
