IA-7 and Totem Sttaf speakers
« on: 10 Sep 2006, 06:01 pm »
Any idea if IA-7 is OK to drive Totem Sttaf speakers ?
Sensitivity : 88 db
Power : 20 - 100 W (max)

IA-7 uses a 100W SMPS for both channels. Since it is very rare to have two speakers simultaneously driving the speakers at the same high power,so most of the time each channel is getting more than 50W (could be as much as 80W) of continuous power. With the 22,000uF cap in IA-7 to provide peak power need, it will sound like it has more than the rated power.
If you have a small room, IA-7 would be adequate with the 88db speaker.

Unless you listen to full scale orchestra - or crank the hell out of your music at/beyond the 100db threshold...  the IA-7 should have enough power and capacitance to drive your Sttaf's well. These particular Totem's are at home in a moderate to small sized room... so provided you have them in such an environment - you should be good to go.

I've owned the Sttaf for a few years and love many of its virtues - its why I still own them to this day. I found that the Sttaf sounds best with well designed class A amplifiers - both transistor or triode. I've yet to encounter much fortune with the electronics that lean more towards the goal of power, control, and transparency with these particular speakers. However, I've not heard the IA-7 (although its something I have considered)...  You get a trial period so you have little to lose, sans shipping.

Good luck.

Many thanks for your response !
Yesterday's evening, I connected these Totem sttaf speakers to my Ref 9 SE + P8 and they sounded very nice !
I was particulary surprised by the good bass of these small speakers.
Of course they cannot be compared to the Martin Logan Aerius on which I normally play the Ref 9 SE, but anyway, I was amazed.
I certainly will purchase the IA-7.

Yes, the sound these small speakers can give is astonishing !
These are very musical with good bass.
They replace the Dynaudio Audience 50 speakers on which a Cyrus 5 amplifier (40 W) was connected (my father's installation).
I'll make an audition this evening (Cyrus + Totem) but I am pretty sure that the Cyrus 5 cannot be compared with IA-7.
Thanks for your advice
