Building a new package
« on: 8 Aug 2006, 10:47 am »
After lurking on this board for the last couple of months, I finally bit the bullet and ordered one of Danny's package deals for my new HT room.  I got the package with two A/V-3's, one A/V-3S, and two A/V-1RS's.  Although I've done several woodworking projects, I have no experience with speaker kits, so I'm sure I'll be pestering this group with questions.  Wish me luck.

Blaine, where did you purchase your room treatments from?

Hey Steve, good luck but most of all, patience.  I've ordered the exact same kit as you almost a year ago.  Like you, first speaker project and on top of it, not much experience with "furniture" type projects, more with hardcore renovations!  haha  At first I was hoping to be done in a month or so.  Then I realized that this was 5 speakers, not 2 so I decided to be a bit more patient, take my time and enjoy the building process as much as I will certainly enjoy the end result.  So I'm still at it, a few hours here and there, sometimes not touching it for a few weeks and then spending half a day because it is raining.  Overall I'm very happy to have started this project, I'm really enjoying the building so it is easy to be patient.  You can have an idea of my project in the gallery section:

I also added 3-4 inches to the height of my AV/3 pair.  Did it at the very bottom so it did not change the dimensions of the inside of the cabinet.  That put the tweeter for me at my main listening possition just below the ear......

Hi, Blaine:

That's a great setup.  I had seen your picture before, and I really like the nice clean look.  I had shown your picture to my wife, who isn't real thrilled with this whole idea ("The best speakers are the ones you can't see.  Why can't you get some of those nice little metal cubes that we saw in Walmart?  Or, if you have to have big speakers, just put them in the closet.").  After she saw your picture, she grudgingly admitted that it showed some "promise."  That's a big step forward.

Where did you get your shelf unit?

My wife just makes sure she takes every opportunity she can to complain about the bass traps!  I built the TV stand, couldn't find anything like that for a reasonable price....so I bought a bunch of oak for $300ish and thats what I ended up with.  The closest I got to buy something was a local furniture store that made something close, it was $850, but it was unfinished.  Decided to just build one myself and design it as I went.  The veneer work to me is the key, get that on, and get it on right, then things will look just fine, like they are bought speakers not something you made yourself.

The room does look nice. Sure, the room treaments aren't the most beautiful pieces of artwork, but as far as room treatment options go, they look damn good!

Hi, Loft:

Thanks for the encouragement.  I agree 100%.  Although I haven't done any speakers, I know from other projects that the first thing to do is throw away any time schedules, and enjoy the process.

Hi Loftprojection.
That looks like Supra speaker cable your using in your boxes. Can you confirm what your using?  Only ask as I have considered supra
for a speaker project I have at the moment. Cheers . Tony

Good eye, it is Supra Classic 2.5, but cannot tell you how it sounds yet or if it will sound better then the cable Danny provides with the kit since I did not listen to it.  Hopefully it sounds good!  It was highly recommended by a friend of mine who has been building speakers before.

Thanks for that.  I am not that happy with some cable supplied with a kit I have from Visaton and think I will give the Supra 2.5 a try as I had considered it a while back and its not expensive. Cheers.

I may not be a very skilled speaker builder, but at least I have an expert assistant:

Is that the pre-made baffle from Danny?  Also is it attached to your cabinet?  If so you have it backwards.  The rounded part on the back side of the edge of the woofers should be to the inside of the cabinet.  There will be a countersunk portion of the tweeter hole as well that should be to the outside so your tweeter will mount flush with the cabinet.......hopefully for your sake I'm wrong, but that's what it looks like in your picture.

You got good eyes, Blaine.  When the picture was taken, I just had the baffle perched on the box so I could get the wires straight.  I flipped it over when I glued it.  But thanks for the heads-up anyway.

Ahhh, the Russian Blue wiring expert, hard at work I see!

I have a Tuxedo "helper", who tends to favour the listening chair, the second I leave it...
